Nausea and Migraine
🤢Nausea is a very common symptom of migraine. It is one of the criteria needed to make the official diagnosis. The reasons for nausea are not clear, but may have to do with slowing of movement in the gut during a migraine or activation of the area of the brain that produces nausea.
🤢For many people, it first comes on during the prodrome phase, prior to onset of headache. It can make it very difficult to take medications or keep down food. In some migraine variants, extreme nausea and vomiting may be the prominent symptom.
🤢Interestingly, for some people, if they are able to vomit, it can bring relief to their migraine attack. The reason is not clear but may have to do with activation of the vagus nerve or release of neuropeptides in the brain.
🤢There are a number of medications that may be helpful in treating nausea.
Some of these are inhaled or taken as a dissolvable pill since it can be difficult to swallow with nausea. Ginger is a well described food that has been proven to help with nausea. It can be ingested in forms of candy or teas. There are also acupressure points described that may help.
🧠 World Stroke Day 🧠
October 29 is “World Stroke Day”- A campaign started to spread awareness and drive action on stroke.
🧠 I recently had the amazing opportunity to speak with about stroke and some of its symptoms on .
🧠 A stroke occurs when an area of the brain is depleted of blood and therefore oxygen. If this is not restored in time, it can lead to permanent injury.
🧠 There are about 800,000 people in the US who have a stroke every year. Controllable risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes.
🧠 After a stroke, many people are left with a disability but rehab can be very helpful in restoring function. About 10-25 percent of patient will have a full recovery.
🧠 For those that do not have a full recovery, it is important to provide on going support with medical care as well as accommodations that can work around their new baseline of capabilities.
🧠 It is also important to learn the most common signs of stroke since early treatment can be vital in restoring blood flow and possibly reversing symptoms. A common mnemonic is FAST.
F- face weakness, one side of the face may look droopy with possibly slurred speech
A- arm or leg weakness
S- sensory symptoms which include numbness in the face/arm/leg on one side
T- time, this stands for the urgency in getting patients medical care ⏰

🟣Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia🧠
🧠Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is another type of neuralgia that can cause pain the back of the throat, tongue or ear.
🧠The type of pain is similar to other neuralgia, which includes severe, electric shock-like pain, that can sometimes come on by swallowing.
🧠It affects only one side of the throat.
🧠It can sometimes be caused by a blood vessel that pushes on the nerve inside the skull. It is also important to rule out secondary causes like cancer in the throat or neck.
🧠Treatments are similar to other types of neuralgia, which can be medications or surgery.
