Today, NYU Langone Health remembers the lives lost 23 years ago on September 11, 2001. We honor the survivors and commend the bravery of responders like Mark Villari, who risked their lives to protect others and safeguard our city.
Mark was working at One Liberty Plaza as an electrical engineer, just a block away from the World Trade Center, and witnessed the South Tower collapse. Despite the danger, he evacuated employees and returned to Ground Zero for the cleanup effort. “I just felt like this is my job; this is what I have to do,” he recalls.
He's still facing the health impacts of that day. Diagnosed with colon, bladder, and prostate cancers, Mark has relied on NYU Langone Health’s World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program since 2013. This specialized program offers vital, no-cost care for WTC responders affected by the toxic aftermath of 9/11, many of whom developed health issues over the years ranging from airway and digestive disorders to cancers and mental health conditions.
Mark is now cancer-free and keeps his health in check with annual screenings. At 68 years old, he remains active in his career and now proudly embraces a new role: grandpa to three young grandsons, who help keep him positive every day. As he puts it: “Family is the best medicine.”

Surgeons at NYU Langone Health just performed the first fully robotic lung transplant in the U.S., setting a new standard in surgical innovation and patient care.
Led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Stephanie Chang of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, the team successfully transplanted a man's right lung using a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system. This advanced approach enabled them to make smaller incisions, which can significantly reduce pain, accelerate recovery time, and enhance the overall hospital experience for patients.
Congratulations to Dr. Chang and the team! Learn more about this milestone from the nation's top-rated lung transplant program, as recognized by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients ⤵️

The joy of savoring solid foods again. The simple pleasure of experiencing scents. These are just a few of the everyday moments that Aaron James now cherishes over a year after undergoing the world's first whole-eye and partial-face transplant at NYU Langone Health.
As Aaron begins a new chapter with his transformed identity, his medical team is also exploring the new frontier of vision restoration. Although Aaron cannot see out of his transplanted eye, it remains viable—demonstrating healthy blood flow, no signs of rejection, and even an electrical response to light within the retina. The results of Aaron's pioneering transplant are detailed in a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
“We are truly amazed by Aaron’s recovery," says Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, who led a team of over 140 medical professionals in this landmark procedure.
“I have felt honored to be patient zero," Aaron says, reflecting on his journey following a high-voltage electrical accident at work. "Even if I can’t see out of my new eye, I’ve gained my quality of life back, and I know this is a step forward in the path to help future patients."

After Stuart Dryburgh was diagnosed with prostate cancer, his team at Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone introduced him to a groundbreaking, noninvasive treatment that trumped the other more traditional options he was considering.
The MR-LINAC machine, a magnetic resonance imaging-guided linear accelerator, allowed Stuart's doctors to view his prostate with extreme precision and deliver targeted radiation while sparing healthy tissue. With just two weeks of treatment last summer, Stuart's prostate-specific antigen levels—an indicator of prostate cancer when elevated—had returned to normal by the fall.
NYU Langone's MR-LINAC, one of only two in the New York metro area, has treated dozens of patients since its Spring 2023 arrival, and our radiation oncologists are currently exploring its potential use for other cancers.
Today, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer is free of prostate cancer and busy with his latest film, a romantic comedy shooting in Brooklyn. “It couldn’t have been easier, to be honest,” he says of his experience.

Kyle Adamkiewicz is drawing from his personal journey with epilepsy and his passion for art to advocate for finding a cure. Since October 2022, he’s been painting and decorating seashells with inspiring messages, placing them along New Jersey’s boardwalks to spread hope and awareness.
Diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, Kyle is a longtime patient of NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and recently received a responsive neurostimulation (RNS) device, which monitors brain activity and delivers targeted stimulation to prevent seizures. Neurosurgeon Dr. Peter A. Rozman, who helped with the procedure, notes that the RNS device can greatly improve seizure control over time—and for Kyle, it has already led to a significant reduction in seizures, allowing him to focus more on his mission to help others with epilepsy.

More than 65 million people worldwide are living with "long COVID," a condition where symptoms persist for weeks or even months after the virus is first contracted—and nearly 5.8 million of them are children like Gabby.
Long COVID is usually difficult for doctors to diagnose, especially in kids and teenagers, but researchers at NYU Langone Health are one step closer to solving the puzzle. In a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, they created an index that categorized the most common symptoms across different age groups that helped them pinpoint those at highest risk for the disease.
The hope is to someday use the index tool to help diagnose long COVID in children, says Dr. Rachel Gross, one of the study authors and an associate professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Population Health at NYU Langone. Dr. Gross is leading this first-of-its-kind research as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s ongoing RECOVER Initiative, with NYU Langone serving as the Clinical Science Core.

Lauren Mims had five different surgeries to remove her fibroids, which are noncancerous growths on the uterus, but they kept coming back. Facing debilitating symptoms and considering a hysterectomy, she found hope with Dr. Tara Shirazian, director of NYU Langone Health's Center for Fibroid Care.
Dr. Shirazian developed a comprehensive plan to remove Lauren's fibroids that involved three different techniques in one surgery, including the use of advanced technology that destroys fibroid tissue while preserving the uterus. The results? Lauren returned to work revitalized, symptom-free, and no longer needing iron infusions to address heavy menstrual bleeding.
"I was tired of just living very sick," Lauren says. "This is the first stretch of my life that I haven’t felt that way, which is really amazing.”

You don’t need to perform gravity-defying stunts to appreciate the extraordinary sense of balance that Olympic athletes exhibit. Yet, in everyday life, we often take balance for granted—until dizziness or a fall reminds us how crucial it is.
Balance relies on the seamless coordination of multiple body systems, and various factors can disrupt it, including infections, injuries, medications, and diseases.
But how do you know if you have an underlying balance issue? Dr. Jennifer Fay and Dr. Gene Fu, neurologic physical therapists from our Vestibular Rehabilitation Program at NYU Langone's Rusk Rehabilitation, note five signs it may be time to see a specialist:
🤕 Difficulty turning your head
