Meet Ellen Victoreen, Mammography Technician at Mount Sinai West Breast Center!

A typical day for me involves reviewing patient histories, charts, and doctor orders. I perform both screening and diagnostic mammography, the latter for patients with specific concerns or follow-ups.

We primarily use Hologic mammography units and desktop tools to view patient charts and previous mammograms. In our training, we learn the specifications and techniques for accurate mammograms. Continuing education is required, and I usually exceed the 24-unit biennial requirement because I love the courses.

I worked in Singapore for 12 years, learning their radiology methods, which broadened my practice scope when I returned to the US. I reassure patients that the benefits of mammography outweigh the risks and share that I have also undergone the test, which helps to calm their fears.

Join us in celebrating Ellen and her outstanding contributions to women's health!

If you, or a friend or loved one, need to have a breast biopsy, know that it’s a safe and straightforward procedure aimed at providing you with the best care.

A breast biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of breast tissue is removed for testing. There are several reasons why a doctor may recommend a breast biopsy – to find out if a lump or mass is malignant or benign or to follow up on an abnormality found in a mammogram like calcium deposits. It’s a crucial step in getting a clear diagnosis and planning the best course of treatment.

Be sure and get screened for breast cancer on the schedule recommended by your doctor. Call 212-523-8333 for an appointment.

For many, summertime is the season for fun-filled outdoor activities like biking and walking. Here are some tips on how to have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the outdoors this summer:

🚴‍♂️ Bicycle Safety
• Everyone including adults should wear a helmet. New York State Law requires bicyclists ages 13 and younger to wear helmets.
• Helmets should be worn properly. Straps should be snug underneath your chin to avoid the helmet twisting around your head.
• Infants younger than 12 months should not be carried on a bike.

🚶🏽 Pedestrian Safety
• Always follow the rules of the road, and cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Obey signs and signals.
• When crossing a crosswalk, look for cars in all directions. Stay cautious and never assume drivers see you. Ensure they acknowledge your presence and establish eye contact with approaching drivers.
• Stay attentive at all times. Avoid distractions such as electronic devices.

☀️ Heat Awareness
• Prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. If your doctor has you on water pills, consult with your doctor on how much water you should drink during hot weather.
• Try to stay in a cool place, out of direct exposure. Wear loose, light-colored, and lightweight clothing.
• Be aware of early signs of general heat illness such as headaches, lightheadedness, and pale or flushed skin. Older adults may be susceptible to overheating and more likely to have chronic conditions or take prescription medications that affect the body’s ability to control its temperature

Be on the lookout for more summer safety tips next week.

🎀 Wondering what happens during a mammogram? Here’s a quick break down on what to expect during your visit:

Step 1: A friendly technologist will position you in front of a special X-ray machine. Your breast will be compressed between two plates for a few seconds while X-ray images are taken. This compression may be a bit umcomfortable and is key to getting clear images of your breast tissue. Your other breast will be X-rayed in the same way.

Step 2: We may also use 3D mammography (also known as breast tomosynthesis) for a more detailed view. Instead of a single image, it captures multiple images from different angles, creating a 3D picture. This can enhance cancer detection and reduce false positives.

Step 3: Once the images are captured, our team of radiology experts analyze your images with precision to detect any signs of concern. You will receive your results within 1-5 business days on MyChart and a written letter in about two weeks.

🌸 Your health and comfort are our top priorities throughout the process. So if you have any questions? Please ask!

Remember, regular mammograms save lives. Schedule yours today — call Mount Sinai Imaging/Radiology Associates West at 212-523-8333.

Did you know that early detection through regular breast screenings can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment for breast cancer? In fact, according to the American College of Radiology, mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the U.S. by nearly 40% since 1990. That’s why getting screened is so important.

We realize, it’s easy to put off appointments or brush aside those annual reminders, but your health it too precious to ignore. Whether you’re in your 20s or your 50s, it’s never too early or too late to start prioritizing breast health.

Remember, early detection saves lives. Ensure a healthier, brighter future for yourself and loved ones — schedule your annual screening.

that 1 in 40 men in the United States will die of prostate cancer? That’s why prostate screening is so important, especially for African American men, who are at a higher risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer. In fact, it’s recommended that African American men start screening between the ages of 40-45, or even earlier if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

To learn more, here’s an informative, short video from Gerald P. Hoke, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Urology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a practicing urologist at Mount Sinai Morningside. He explains how regular screening can save lives by detecting prostate cancer early and the types of screenings.

Let’s talk about something super important today: breast screening.

that breast screening can help detect breast cancer early when it’s most treatable? By getting regular screenings, you’re not just taking care of yourself, but you’re also giving yourself the best chance at early detection and treatment if needed.

Not sure when to start screening? The age at which women should begin breast screening can vary based on individual risk factors, family history, and professional medical advice. However, general guidelines recommend that women start getting regular mammograms at age 40. It's important for women to discuss their individual risk and screening recommendations with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate screening schedule for them.

If you’re ready to get your annual screening or would would like to speak to one of our breast care physicians at Mount Sinai West, please make an appointment at 1-212-523-8222.
