Knowing and understanding yourself allows you to engage in specific forms of self-care that celebrate your neurodivergence and help you to flourish."]

Many neurodivergent kids and adults listen and process things better when we doodle, use a fidget or stim in some other way.

Quote text: My policy on letting students doodle or use fidgets in class as long as they remain focused and don't distract others was tested when a quiet student started knitting during a class discussion! I almost stopped her, but it didn't seem to bother anyone else and she was making great contributions to the discussion.

A few weeks later she handed me a funky knitted scarf with a note. The note thanked me for letting her knit during class. Doing something with her hands reduced her anxiety about talking in front of her peers. She was proud of how confident talking during discussions had made her.

I think of her and of why I need to be willing to take chances every time I wear the scarf. Credit: WeAreTeachers.
