Just missing the Christmas Season, the new downtown J.C. Penney's Store opened with great fanfare on January 2, 1958. Managed by Harold K. Pemberton, the $1 million dollar modern store was designed by the local firm of Wohleb & Wohleb. Three times larger than its previous location of 27 years, the new store offered expanded apparel and soft goods, as well as home furnishing and jewelry. Owned and built by the Casco Co., and then leased to J.C. Penney's, the store had three floors and contained 23,000 sq. ft. of showroom space. A bonus to customers was the rear parking lot and nearly a dozen "carefully selected" employees to aid you with your shopping needs!

We have long admired this cool Miesian style Medical / Dental Clinic on Olympia's West side. Constructed for just $21,000 in 1955, the building was originally home to the medical offices of Dr. Bert E. Eldred (a dentist) and Dr. John M. Donnell (a physician and surgeon). The practice grew quickly and several additional doctors joined the team. We have yet to discover who the architect was.. if you have any insight, please let us know.
