Unfortunately, the previous post about our annual Wildlife Handling Course was removed by Facebook, so here it is again! Wolf Haven is excited to offer this course with Dr. Mark Johnson from Global Wildlife Resources, who has taught and worked on wildlife captures worldwide for over 30 years. He teaches students as well as professionals from federal, state, tribal, and private agencies. This course is one of the most extensive, current, and innovative chemical immobilization courses in North America, with hands-on labs each day including the immobilization of captive wolves.
This three-day course will run September 24-26, 2024 in Tenino, Washington. Space is limited and priority will be given to persons working with wildlife in the field or in wildlife facilities. Visit wolfhaven.org/events for more information and the application form.

It's Tenino Tuesday! In December, animal care staff noticed Luca had been chewing on his rear. After a round of antibiotics did not completely resolve the issue, we took Luca to the vet where he was treated for an a**l gland infection.
Any time we bring an animal to the vet, we make sure they receive a thorough exam from nose to tail (we call it the Wolf Haven Special). During Lucaโs exam, Dr. Ripka noticed a testicular anomaly. Pathology results showed abnormal cells that could be cancerous. We returned to Evergreen Veterinary Hospital in January to have Luca neutered, and we received the excellent news that the neuter procedure was curative.
Depicted is vet tech, Jennifer, taking x-rays of Luca as part of his Wolf Haven Special exam. We are grateful for the excellent care our animals receive at EVH.

It's Behind the Scenes Wednesday! We are very grateful for Wolf Havenโs attending veterinarian, Dr. Kristin Ripka (foreground), and her colleague, Dr. Erica Harriage, for coming to do health checks and administer vaccines to the group of six Mexican wolf brothers last week. The wolf depicted here was anesthetized for a more thorough examination.

Here is the latest update from the Washington State Department of Agriculture in regard to the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC).
State vets office gives update on canine respiratory disease With recent reports of an unidentified canine illness increasing across the nation, the Washington State Veterinarian is encouraging dog owners to be vigilant to keep their animals safe and healthy.
December: The final countdown to 2024 โ๏ธ
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Evergreen Veterinary Hospital ๐ค๐งก
We have been receiving many calls about the current outbreak of a canine respiratory disease. To recap what we know:
- The disease seems to have originated in Oregon.
- Cases of this disease have been recorded in several states, including Washington.
- This disease presents itself with similar symptoms as kennel cough.
Our current recommendation is to avoid places where dogs congregate. This includes places like dog parks and boarding facilities. If you need to board your canine companion, make sure they are up to date on their Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccines. It is still safe to go on walks with your dog, just try to avoid interactions with other dogs.
If your dog is presenting with potentially infectious respiratory symptoms, please call and schedule an appointment with our office. We are currently performing curbside appointments for potentially infectious respiratory cases.
For more information, read the following articles about this respiratory outbreak:

We will continue to update the community as we receive more updates ourselves.
Mysterious dog respiratory illness: What to know Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.
Our limited time increased rebate offer may be over, but our prices are still great! Check out our year-round prices when compared to online pharmacies!
