Unfortunately, some insurance may not cover routine colonoscopies for people under the age of 45 unless they have certain risk factors, such as re**al bleeding or a family history. That’s why people in their 20s, 30s and early 40s need to watch carefully for any unusual symptoms that could indicate colon cancer.
If you notice blood in your stool, let your primary care provider (P*P) or a gastroenterologist know immediately. You can get checked for hemorrhoids and, if necessary, get a colonoscopy. Other symptoms include changes in bowel habits, like diarrhea, constipation, or both, and also changes in the size and shape of your stool. Do not feel embarrassed to discuss this with a healthcare provider. It could save your life.
Did you know that 1.3 million people die each year from hepatitis - and the number of deaths is rising.
Many people with Hepatitis B virus won't experience symptoms and likewise, many people with Hepatitis C don't look or feel sick. In either case, they might not know they have the virus. Left untreated, both infections can cause serious health problems, including liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death. Getting tested is the only way to know you have either virus.
The good news is that Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are vaccine preventable and Hepatitis C can be cured. Talking to a doctor could save your life – and GANM has board-certified specialists that can help!

"I'm healthy and have never had any signs or symptoms."

"Am I really that old?" That is the first question you may ask when your primary care provider (P*P) recommends a colonoscopy to get screened for colon cancer when you turn 45.
Some patients may ask if they really need to get a colonoscopy, or if they can just get one of the stool-based blood tests now available. Our answer? Get a colonoscopy, hands down!
Here's why: Colon cancer doesn't just magically appear. It comes from a colon polyp, a small clump of cells that forms on the colon lining that can take several years to go from a small polyp to malignant. With a colonoscopy, our gastroenterologists remove the suspicious polyps before they become a problem! While there are several screening tests available that look for signs of cancer, a colonoscopy remains the only screening tool that can prevent colon cancer before it starts.
If you are age 45 or older and haven't been screened for colon cancer, call 662-234-9888 or visit our website to request your appointment today!
