A devastating earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit Gros-Morne, Haiti and surrounding areas yesterday evening. 12 dead and 135 injured as of Sunday morning, but the total damage is still being assessed.

From what it sounds like, our friends at the Alma Mater Hospital have checked in and seem to be okay. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the affected Haitian community, and AtriaConnect stands strong with Haiti during this troubling time.

Sonographer Victoria Vatsvåg completed her Bachelor's Degree in Radiography from University College of Bergen, Norway in 2005. The same year, she moved to Malawi where she worked for one year at a local hospital. Her job included running the hospital x-ray lab and traveling around the country teaching conventional x-ray to radiographers.

In 2007, Victoria moved to Dublin, Ireland, where she worked at a University Hospital and at the same time started her ultrasound studies. Over the course of five years she studied 7 ultrasound-related modules. Her clinical modules are general abdominal, gynaecological and vascular ultrasound.

In 2013, Victoria returned to Stavanger to start work at a private medical imaging clinic as a sonographer, and has stayed there since. As well as working full time with clinical ultrasound, she also has a second job as Training Manager for a small Stavanger based company.

Enjoy an evening of virtuosic classical chamber and solo performances from different musical periods featuring the Daghlian Ensemble and pianist Michael Yao. This benefit concert is to support a medical charity co-founded by performers George Daghlian and Michael Yao called Atria Connect. Atria Connect focuses on bringing portable medical devices directly to underprivileged medical communities across the globe. Because Haiti’s average life expectancy is only 44 years and many of the leading causes of death are medically preventable, all proceeds from this concert will be used to send a team of 15 physicians to Haiti with portable ultrasound devices to teach local doctors on how to diagnose and treat these preventable illnesses. Help support their noble cause by attending this concert!

WELCOME TO ATRIA CONNECT!

Atria is a nonprofit organization with the goal of connecting patients in low-income communities around the world with novel point-of-care devices, trained physicians, and continuity of care through Atrium Connect.

We are excited to be launching Project Haiti this upcoming fall! Haitians have access to fewer than 25 physicians per 100,000 individuals and only 25% of all births are attended by a healthcare professional.

During our Beta Trial, Project Haiti aims to make a difference by partnering with a local Haitian hospital, the Alma Mater Hospital in Gonaives. We will send in trained professional doctor volunteers with portable ultrasound devices to hold teaching seminars for local physicians. We will also focus on continuity of care by enrolling them in our online platform, where they can continue to learn more about the technology and connect with other mentors/physicians.

Through this project, we hope to provide the people of Haiti not only with short-term professional healthcare, but with a long-term, more sustainable method of continued medical education through a network of peer physicians and exposure to new technology/medical advancements.

For those of you who may be unaware, recent events in Haiti have been marked by civil unrest and protests in Port-au-Prince. Sparked by a rise in fuel prices, the unrest has shut down the Haitian capital, and the U.S. Embassy in Haiti has encouraged American citizens to take shelter.

The protests have understandably led to questions about Project Haiti, set to start this fall organized by Atria Connect.

I’d like to remind everyone that the guest hosts in Haiti, the private es**rt from Port-au-Prince to the Alma Mater Hospital, and all of the volunteers are making every effort to keep everyone as safe as possible and make it a pleasant and secure experience for all involved. Atria Connect’s priority first and foremost is to ensure the safety of its volunteers and additional personnel.

Project Haiti is currently set to start in the middle of September, which is approximately two months away. Atria Connect will do a preliminary assessment of the situation in Haiti in about a month at the beginning of August. Based on the situation in Haiti, we may elect to continue forward with the proposed start date, or delay the start of the project until the situation in Haiti has calmed. All options are currently on the table as we work to create a solution that best ensures the safety and wellbeing of our volunteers. A report will be publicly issued in August detailing our decision and associated rationale. As developments come to light, I’ll make sure to keep everyone updated as to how Atria Connect is responding.

Please join me in sending our prayers to the people of Haiti. May we hope that the conflict resolves soon and that the kind people are able to find peace.

Atria Connect firmly believes in the values of organizational transparency in our decision making. Should you have any questions about the steps we are taking to ensure volunteer safety, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Respectfully,

Michael Yao
Co-Founder of Atria Connect
