In Gratitude to Grant Farred, author of THE PERVERSITY OF GRATITUDE, by A. E. Ted Wall The Ancient Rhymer

The Perversity of Gratitude,
Written by a truly amazing dude,
At Livingstone High, he went to school,
Where teachers taught him, thinking is cool!

Those teachers taught students how to think,
Expecting them to go beyond the brink,
Within South Africa at a time,
When life there was clearly not sublime.

The teachers had a moral calling,
Think clearly although things are falling,
High expectations, they always set,
And helped students see, they could be met.

The shared school vision was very clear,
Break free of apartheid and the fear,
How to be in the world, was the task,
The teachers there, did always ask.

The book paints four portraits very true,
Of key mentors that the author knew,
Each one contributed in their way,
To the professor, he is today.

To him deep reflection is the key,
In helping students learn how to be,
Making our planet a better place,
Is the goal, he hopes, they will embrace.

A. E. Ted Wall The Ancient Rhymer
These verses express my thanks to Grant Farred for the insights that he shared in his excellent book, The Perversity of Gratitude: An Apartheid Education, on the importance of education and the crucial role that dedicated teachers play in the learning process, even under the most restrictive conditions.
