An illustration from one of the books in our Dunleavy Collection: The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young
by the Rev. Richard Newton (1813-1887)
Philadelphia, c. 1880
Woodcut from The Life of Jesus. New York, 1937. - from the digital archive of Devotion: An Iconography of the Life of Jesus. This exhibition was curated by Sarah Seraphin, Special Collections Librarian. The exhibition was mounted in the Connelly Library for the 2013/2014 school year.
"Here the artist relies purely on symbols to depict the scene of the Last Supper. This illustration is quite lovely in its simplicity. At the center of the scene are the symbols of the Holy Eucharist, the bread and the chalice of wine. At the head of the table is a large cross, meant to depict Christ. Around the table are eleven smaller crosses representing the faithful apostles; Judas is represented by the symbol of a snake."
It was a year ago today, March 19 2020, that Connelly Library closed for COVID. 😷 Thank you to all our wonderful staff who helped keep us going virtually and then followed all safety precautions when we resumed in person. And thanks to all our patrons! We hope to see more of you soon (maybe unmasked - dare we say it!😄) We miss you!📚
Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone!

Both Persons' and Foxe's books are available for viewing in La Salle's Special Collections department. (Thanks to Heather Willever-Farr, our Special Collections Librarian!☘️)
