Oh it’s gonna be a hot one in the beer garden tonight, when two great DJs team up to present a Prince side-project tribute!
Join two Prince fanatics DJ EZ Lou and DJMB as they do a joint tribute to Prince and the many side projects he worked on throughout his illustrious career.
EZ Lou has been Pittsburgh’s premier synth and new wave DJ for four decades. He is perhaps best known for his weekly 80s night residence at the Upstage, which this humble writer would describe as nothing short of the best weekly event that has happened in Pittsburgh history.
DJMB is the creative genius behind Alternate Histories and the hugely successful In Bed by Ten dance parties. However, his custom license plate NITE MVS, a tribute to Bob Seger, remains the greatest thing he’s ever done.
Oh it’s going to be a PERFECT night in the beer garden. Gorgeous weather, big burgers, heaping steins of lager, and the sweet sounds of clarinet and saxophone filling the beer garden evening air. Our best buds the Boilermaker Jazz Band are back after a week off, and we can’t wait to hear them play!
Prost!
Kölsch is back, baby, and just in time for this heat (and for Wednesday Kölsch Night at the Beer Hall). Kölsch is a tightrope walk of balance for any brewer, and while we’ve always said that our Kölsch is a work-in-progress until it’s as good as the fresh stuff served right from the source in Köln, even the ever-modest head brewer has to admit that this batch is pretty damn good.
Grab a few stangen tonight and snag your table for starting at 7.
Prost!
Helles yeah! It’s another beautiful day in the beer garden, with crisp cold lagers, crisp white wines, and music. Live jazz from the talented and his quartet from noon to 3. spinning slow groove 45s from 3-6.
Prost!
When Chiodo’s closed in 2005, this guy, Mark Fallon, had the good sense to ask head Chef Marsha Anderson for the recipe to the world famous Mystery Sandwich. And, like so many other things that Mark, the unofficial historian of the Steel Valley, has preserved, he has so kindly shared it with us.
So here it is — the Chiodo’s Mystery Sandwich — an incredibly tasty mash up of a burger and a kielbasa sandwich with a touch of Joe Chiodo’s Italian ancestry sprinkled in. We’re serving them today along with some other Chiodo’s hits (oh hello, Chipped Chopped Ham sandwich) to pay tribute to a bar that brought happiness, joy, fun and comfort to this valley for 58 years and to raise some money to rehang the Robert Qualters mural “Made with Homestead Steel,” which once graced the side of Chiodo’s Tavern.
Here’s to Chiodo’s, a Homestead and Pittsburgh institution whose huge shoes we can never fill, but who can serve as our inspiration as we attempt to bring that same happiness, joy, fun and comfort to the community here in Homestead.
Prost!
Pouring them early and often today. Open at 11:30 with a lunch menu. Germany vs Spain at Noon (sound on). Portugal vs France at 3 pm (music on). 80s Night with DJ from 7-10.
Prost!
Anyone who lived in the Steel Valley before 2005, knows the “world famous” Chiodo’s Tavern, the Steel Valley temple for everyone, from steel workers to bachelorette parties. It was the platonic ideal of a Pittsburgh bar, with a great bar menu, an organically kitchy ambiance, and a hard-working ethic apparent in its owner and bartenders that matched that of the community. As with any great bar with such a long tenure, it’s impossible to overstate how much Chiodo’s meant to this community.
We asked local Steel Valley historian (who, in fact, met his wife at Chiodo’s), Mark Fallon, to provide us with a brief history of Chiodo’s:
“Joseph Chiodo open his tavern in 1947. An Italian immigrant and veteran of D-Day, Joe learned his work ethic from his father, who owned a cobbler shop in Homestead. Chiodo’s was originally a steelworkers bar, one of many serving the workers at U.S. Steel Homestead Works and Mesta Machine Company. Famous for the “Mystery Sandwich”, in later years it became known for its large import and microbrew selection (thanks Sam). The bar was packed with donated memorabilia, which was later auctioned off. Joe sold the bar in 2005. It was quickly demolished for the progress of man.”
In of the devasting decline of steel, Chiodo’s represented a constant in a rapidly changing landscape, a refuge for those who felt their community being displaced. Nearly 20 years later, scarce a conversation about beer can occur in this valley without its mention.
On Saturday, July 5th, we’re going to pay tribute to this legendary tavern by running a pop-up Chiodo’s kitchen menu as we begin to raise funds for the restoration of a mural by local Homestead artist Robert Qualters that once graced the side of Chiodo’s building before its demolition. We’ll have former Chiodo’s bartenders on hand to help.
We have the recipe for the mystery sandwich that Mark photographed on Chiodo’s last night of business, and we will be serving them all day.
We will donate $1 per item sold to the restoration, re-printing, and hanging of Homestead Artist, Robert Qualter’s “Made with Homestead Steel” mural on the side of Steel Valley High School (and in the Golden Age Beer Garden).
Come to the dark side, well at least for a few steins of our Dunkel (“dark”) lager. Our Dunkel is an exploration of Munich malts (we use three different ones, in fact) but avoids being a cloying or overly sweet malt bomb. It’s balanced with some crisp hops on the back end, which also provide a touch of citrus zest making this beer a surprisingly refreshing summertime crusher, while remaining hardy and robust for the guest who wants a “dark” beer year round.
We have the Tony Campbell jam session today at noon, from 3-6, and the super-talented (joined by Cliff Barnes and David Throckmorton) from 7-10.
Prost!
