It was with the utmost sadness that I inform you that Dr. Linda Garand passed away on March 18th. Please keep Dr. Garand and her husband, Ben, in your prayers.
Linda Garand, PhD, RN, GCNS-BC, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, obtained a PhD in Nursing from the University of Iowa and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Garand achieved significant national recognition for her contributions to the field of geropsychiatric nursing. She published extensively and presented her work at Scientific Meetings and Global Consortiums. Peer and student evaluations of her teaching effectiveness were consistently excellent. Her research focused on preserving the mental health and well-being of family caregivers of persons with cognitive impairment (e.g. Alzheimers Disease, mild cognitive impairment, and traumatic brain injury). With support from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIHM), she characterized the nature and level of psychiatric morbidity and burden among spouses of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, a precursor to some forms of dementia), and then she conducted a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of a preventive, problem-solving training (PST)-based mental health intervention with family caregivers of persons with MCI or early dementia. Relative to a comparison intervention, caregivers that received the PST intervention endorsed significantly lower burden and depression levels over one year of follow-up. Dr. Garand was also awarded a U.S. Department of Defense Peer reviewed Alzheimer's Research Program Award from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.
Dr. Garand will be remembered for her kindness, love of nursing science, and sense of humor.
will have a memorial service in the Duquesne University Chapel of the Holy Spirit in the near future. We will provide details once they are finalized.

Congratulations to 2022 BSN graduate, Sara Greenan. Sara works at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, PA, and was awarded a "DAISY."
The DAISY award is an extraordinary care award given to nurses whose patients nominate them (https://bit.ly/Award-Daisy). Here is Sara's nominees' story (in her own words):.
"I was sitting with the Patient whom she was caring for, I was really proud to be standing with her as her patient got very upset, calling her and all the staff names, and also refusing the care the patient needed. The whole shift I watch how she stayed so very professional as the patient tried to break her spirits down. She never allowed the patient to take her out of character. Once she informed the patient that he was being moved to a different room, that upset the patient to the point that we had to call security to transport the patient to the new room. I would like to let Sara know that she is a ROCK STAR!!"
Sara, we are so proud of you!
