Preservation Pittsburgh
Preservation Pittsburgh's history began with the tearing down of a City landmark--the Syria Mosque. The board meets quarterly.
The loss of this acoustically perfect and much-loved concert hall (the location is still a parking lot for UPMC) convinced a group of concerned citizens that there needed to be a grass-roots, activist preservation organization in town to take on looming historic preservation battles in the city. Our Board of Directors consists of interested citizens willing to advocate for sensitivity to preservat

We couldn't have asked for a nicer day for this 100 year commemoration and restoration unveiling of the Peabody Memorial. Thanks to James Hill for all his hard work campaigning to make it happen, our donors, and the support of Pittsburgh Public Schools and our elected officials.
Join Preservation Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Pittsburgh Obama Academy on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 11AM for the rededication of the landmark Peabody Memorial to Soldiers.
Dedicated to those who served in the First World War, Preservation Pittsburgh has restored the most significant piece of public art at City school for its 100th anniversary.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Join us this Thursday at 11am for the centennial and restoration commemoration of the Peabody Memorial! See link in post for more details.
Join us on Thursday, May 30 at 11 am at the Obama Academy!!
In July 2023 Preservation Pittsburgh began raising funds to restore and landmark the Peabody Memorial to Soldiers located at Pittsburgh Public Schools' Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, which served as the Benjamin H. Peabody High School from 1911-2011. Renowned sculptor Frank Vittor was commissioned to create what is the most significant war memorial at a Pittsburgh Public Schools building today. The memorial, which commemorates the 500 students who served in the First World War with 17 killed in action, was dedicated on May 30, 1924.
Through the leadership of James A. Hill, Campaign Chair, we raised the funds and conservation work is underway. As part of the project, current Obama students were involved in a several ways:
-Learning about the First World War from a local perspective as part of their International Baccalaureate curriculum
-Learning about the memorial conservation process from the conservator
-Researching the families from their own school building who served
-Helping to compose their own school Alma Mater for the ceremony
We are eternally grateful for the donations that came from Peabody/Obama alumni, the general public, and foundation grants. We will celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the memorial and its renovation on Thursday, May 30 at 11 am at the Obama Academy. This date is one hundred years to the day of the memorial's first dedication!
Please join us for this free outdoor public ribbon cutting ceremony (we anticipate the event to last one hour). Rain or shine. Street and public parking only. We hope to see you there.
Restoration work includes:
-The full restoration of the memorial's bronze body and the recreation of Victory's missing hand & wreath
-The installation of a new flagpole
-Architectural lighting
-Connecting to East Liberty Boulevard to better capture the original intent before the school's 1975-1978 renovation

A great discussion about this multi-year, complicated process to preserve Pittsburgh history. Thanks to Heinz History Center, Cantini's family, City of Pittsburgh, Markosky Engineering, PennDOT, and a few familiar Preservation Pittsburgh faces for putting this presentation together.
We love a good Section 106 outcome! Preservation Pittsburgh served as a consulting party for the PennDOT I-579 Cap project that required the removal of Virgil Cantini mosaics from their original location in a pedestrian tunnel connecting the Lower Hill District to downtown. The mosaics' reinstallation in Steel Plaza was recently completed. A panel about the artist and effort to preserve this piece of Pittsburgh art history is being held this Sunday (2/25) for free at the Heinz History Center.
