Our Story
Built on the foundation of the Vassar’s old brewery, the theater building is now preserved and maintained by the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization dedicated to meet the cultural needs of the community by providing venues for artists to showcase their talent in theater, music, dance, fine and visual arts while preserving and maintaining two historically significant landmark buildings. It serves as an important cultural venue, civic and social gathering place, as well as historic site. The Vassar Brothers Home for Aged Men is situated on the former site of Mathew Vassar’s city residence. The magnolia tree from which Matthew cut a flowering branch and laid it on President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin as his funeral train stopped at the Poughkeepsie station in April of 1865, still blooms on the front lawn today. Now the home office of the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, it is also home to local nonprofit service organizations like Friends of Seniors, the Dutchess Interfaith Council and Cocoon Theatre. Several healing arts practitioners and therapists rent offices in this sister building across from the Theater. Both buildings continue to be an active community resource and provide cultural “buzz” for the Queen City and Hudson Valley tourists and residents.
