Arlington Professional Firefghters providing Fire/EMS services to the residents of Poughkeepsie ,NY
This month, Arlington Professional Firefighters have been conducting in-house confined space training. Members trained on various aspects of setting up for and executing a confined space entry/rescue, including air monitoring, ventilation, utilizing high point systems like the paratech_inc tripod, rope systems, communications, and patient packaging. These training opportunities allow our firefighters and our Special Operations Technicians to hone their skills and better prepare for unique and challenging emergency situations. Special thanks to the Town of Poughkeepsie Water Department for making this training possible.

Arlington Professional Firefighters wish a safe and happy National EMS Week to all of our EMS partners and providers, especially our partners at Empress Emergency Medical Services and IAEP Local 20! In honor of the 50th Anniversary of EMS Week, 'Honoring our Past. Forging our Future.' a brief history on Arlington's EMS history: The District was created in 1922 and began it's EMS history early on when Engine Co. 1 was designated as one of the first American Red Cross 'Road Stations' allowing delivery of aid to the community. In the 1950's the hospitals which were providing ambulance transport, could no longer maintain coverage to the District and the District began providing its own local ambulance services with providers knowing First Aid and CPR, who would later become NYS Emergency Medical Technicians. In 1990 the District began providing Advanced Life Support with 4 Paramedics. In 2017, the District contracted with a commercial ALS transport agency to manage patient transport to the hospital. Currently, we have 40 EMTs and 34 Paramedics, with an ALS Engine First Response model, and Empress as an ALS Transport partner. Each fire engine is staffed with at least one paramedic, which provides for rapid ALS care to our patients prior to ambulance arrival, while maintaining sufficient fire protection of the district.
On Thursday, 4/25 Arlington Professional Firefighters were dispatched to a kitchen fire at Manchester Garden Apartments. The first due engine was on scene in approximately 2 minutes, to find fire and smoke showing from a second floor apartment. A 10-75 working fire assignment was transmitted bringing remaining Arlington equipment to the scene: the incident was then upgraded to a second alarm bringing in mutual aid for station coverage. One handline was put into operation. Fire had extended into a neighboring apartment unit, but was extinguished and under control in less than 15 minutes. Arlington was assisted on scene by City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department NY Local 596 and Empress Emergency Medical Services. The fire displaced 8 people who are being assisted by the Red Cross. One firefighter sustained minor injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Arlington Fire Investigators. Roosevelt Fire District, Pleasant Valley Fire Company, and New Hackensack Fire Company provided station coverage. While Arlington was operating at the apartment fire, Pleasant Valley handled a dumpster fire in the Manchester area, and callback firefighters along with Empress handled a Cardiac Arrest in the Spackenkill area. Arlington Professional Firefighters extends its sincerest condolences to the brothers and sister in blue, from Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department following the Line of Duty Deaths of an officer and deputy. Our hearts are with the families, loved ones, and both agencies during this tragic time.
TWO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY:
On Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at about 7:07 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle in the area of Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street. Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver refused to stop and fled the area. The officers lost sight of the vehicle but were able to record the license plate information.
Officers checked the vehicle registration and determined the registered owner resides on Darien Drive, in Liverpool, New York.
Syracuse Police responded to the address, along with members of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. The vehicle was found to be parked at a residence on Darien Drive.
Shortly after arrival, the police officers and sheriff’s deputies were encountered by an armed male and an exchange of gunfire followed.
One Syracuse Police Officer and one Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy were struck by gunfire. The armed suspect was also shot.
Both law enforcement officers were transported to Upstate University Hospital where life saving measures were conducted. The Syracuse Police Officer and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy succumbed to their injuries.
The suspect was also transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, as well as with their brothers and sisters in law enforcement who are suffering in the wake of this tragedy.
We thank the community for their outpouring of support.
More from this week’s Active Threat Integrated Response Course! Great work by all agencies involved, and special thanks to the agencies and officials who made this joint training effort possible!
While some members were training in Rope Rescue this week, other members of Arlington Professional Firefighters attended a 4 day Active Threat Integrated Response Course. This class was attended by both Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS agencies from the county. Students learned and trained how to operate together as a Rescue Task Force to triage and treat victims in an Active Threat environment. The course was delivered by LSU’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training (NCBRT) with support from DC Government, New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and Dutchess County Emergency Management. Special thanks to all our local officials who made this training possible!
This week, Arlington Professional Firefighters conducted 1 of 2 in-house Rope Operations Classes. Our Training Division is hosting the class for our members to more efficiently provide training, and to improve the capabilities of our firefighters in rope rescue operations, as well as better support Technical Rescue operations. This training was made possible by the Municipal Investment Grant funding and the support of our Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino. Special thank you to Oakwood Commons for use of their property.
Arlington Professional Firefighters extends its sincerest condolences to the Alongi and Cox families following the passing of Joan Alongi. Joan’s daughter and son both served for the district in the roles of Fire Commissioner and Chief, respectively. Rest easy, Joan.

Last night, shortly after 20:00, our Joint Special Operations team was activated for the Structural Collapse team, to respond to Dover for a building collapse. Arlington Professional Firefighters and Structural Collapse Technicians, along side City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department NY Local 596 and LaGrange Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3813, responded to the scene with technical rescue apparatus and resources. Crews began shoring operations to gain access to the building to find a basement floor collapse as a result of excavation of earth beneath. This compromised the 3 stories above. Residents of the floors above the collapse had evacuated to safety. With basement occupant probability low, our technical rescue team conducted void search using cameras, as well as, partnering with Dutchess County Sheriff's Office Drone Unit, and New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services OFPC Canine Search Unit to confirm there were no victims within the collapse.
Congratulations to our recently promoted officers who were sworn into their new roles at last night’s BOFC meeting: Lieutenant West, Lieutenant DelliPaoli, Captain Sylvester, and Battalion Chief Dunderdale!
