See You In Prescott Today! August 14, 2024 The date has come and we're all headed up the hill to Prescott for the unveiling of the Doc Holliday plaque on Montezum...
And then one of the coolest things the WRH has seen in a while. Bob Boze Bell and True West have been incredibly supportive! Thank you!
This is just one of the funniest things the WRH has seen in a while. Only $75,000 for a photo of a fella who may not have even combed his hair that day!
Doc Holliday Tintype Antique Ferrotype A Few Years After Dentist School | eBay I have discovered tintypes of the Earp parents Prescott and Virginia. Another acquisition was a tintype of Wyatt with his first wife Urilla, Urilla with Josephine whom would marry after Urilla’s passing.
Thank you True West for making this happen.
The last known verified photo of Doc Holliday was taken in Prescott by D.F. Mitchell in 1879-80. Mitchell had a successful photo studio, Capital Art Studio, on North Cortez.

Hear ye! Hear ye! THERE ARE STILL TICKETS AVAILABLE! All Wild West history lovers are invited to "Doc Holliday Night" on August 14 in beautiful Prescott, Arizona. At 4:00PM, there will be the unveiling of the "Doc Holliday in Prescott" historical marker behind Bashford Courts, the parking lot near 123 Montezuma Street. This open to the public and once-in-a-lifetime ceremony will be followed by a reception/cocktail party at the splendid Marina Room at the Hassayampa Inn, 122 E. Gurley Street. Bill Williams and John File will provide music. Bob Boze Bell and the True West Magazine crew will be on hand as well! See attached flyer for more information. Tickets for the reception can be purchased at the Prescott Western Heritage Center, 156-C, Montezuma Street/Whiskey Row. Call 928-910-2307, or check out WWW.VISITWHC.ORG. We aim to make "Doc Holliday Night" an annual event. Your participation will be greatly appreciated!
Another Earp photo scam. Buyer beware. There are so many. This is not Virgil, and the one with it claiming to be Wyatt Earp as a boxing referee and priced at $8000, that ain't him either. Thank you Parker Anderson and Duncan Scotland for making the WRH aware of these fakes. There are so many attempts to sell fake Earp and Doc photos, and they are apparently getting away with it.

Thank you Signals AZ for the nice plug! (Yes we are aware that the image is not Doc - happens a lot with that image.)

I cannot say enough about the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation, Inc. and the people who attended two "Doc Holliday in Prescott" lectures. Thank you to Prescott Constable Ron Williams for the photos and for adding his insight into the great Dennis Quaid.
UPDATE! The "Doc Holliday in Prescott" commemorative booklet is here from the printer! It will be made available at the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation, Inc. this Wednesday July 31 during the second Doc Holliday in Prescott presentation starting at 7PM. Tickets still available at the Western Heritage Center on Whiskey Row! Booklet funded by Monty and Deb Packard, and Wendi Courtney. Design by Cassie Williams. Printed by EMI Printworks. Very very happy with the result. This is a precursor to the "Doc and Kate in Prescott" book now being researched and written.
Check out this amazing work by Jon LeVan!
A change in the musical entertainment for the August 14th "Doc Holliday Night" event. The great Bill Williams, a local favorite, will be performing!
The Whiskey Row Historian uses this PowerPoint slide during presentations as a guideline for the Earps/Doc in Prescott. There are many many wild claims to that end, and some of them are pretty funny. The latest one Wendi and the WRH heard was in Vail, CO, of all places. Wendi stops to pet almost every dog we see, and during an event in Vail, we stopped to hang out with a black lab who had a tennis ball for us to throw. His owner got to talking to us and he mentioned that he had recently visited Prescott and that he learned about the Earps there. The WRH kept his mouth shut, but Wendi asked, "What did you hear?" He went on to tell us, "They told us that Wyatt Earp summered in Prescott, and he spent his winters down in Tombstone." We could not suppress our laughter and we think we unintentionally embarrassed our new friend. So the "Lion of Tombstone" Wyatt Earp is now the "Snowbird of Tombstone"!
In John Boessenecker's wonderful, HIGHLY recommended work, "Ride the Devil's Herd," he writes on page 67 about how Wyatt Earp would have been viewed upon his arrival in Tombstone: "Far from being a famous lawman, Wyatt Earp was then an obscure character, well-known only in a few Kansas cowtowns." And so it was when he passed through Prescott. Listeners beware regarding any Wyatt Earp in Prescott stories you hear. This phenomenon will be addressed along the way as The Prescott/Tombstone Connection Project progresses.
Nice to see this post being shared across the internet. The WRH, however, only wishes his name was really Brady. Much more cool than Brad. Brady is a rodeo star name. Brad is, well, Brad.
One of the best groups in Prescott is the wonderful Arizona Territorial Society. Great turnout and fantastic audience! Sometimes these images make the WRH look like he's directing a choir.
An excerpt from the upcoming Doc Holliday in Prescott commemorative book.
PROLOGUE
“The Tombstone experience was the defining moment of John Henry Holliday’s life. Everything before it was prologue; everything after, postscript.”
Gary Roberts, in Doc Holliday: The Life and Legend
For the most part, Prescott, Arizona, was one of the more pleasant, less chaotic phases of Doc Holliday’s prologue. It was the tail end of that part of his life, and can be accurately thought of as the calm before the storm that was Tombstone. Doc apparently stayed out of trouble in Prescott, for his name never appeared in the local newspaper, The Arizona Weekly Miner, during his two sojourns in the mountain town. He did not stab anyone or anything like it, as Tombstone the movie has misled some to believe. But Doc made a strong impression that would later be recalled and reported. Of course, he or anyone else could not have known that he was on his way to, and just around the corner in time and place, from becoming one of the most iconic characters in Wild West history. Fast forward over 140 years later, his specter is ever present in Prescott, especially along its famous Whiskey Row.
It's going to the printer! Book layout design by the marvelous Cassie Williams, the Constableless. . . .
The Doc Holliday in Prescott commemorative booklet is close to going to print. It will be available on August 14 for the Doc Holliday Night event. It will eventually grow up and be a reeeaaaaal book! Hope to see y'all there August 14!
The Whiskey Row Historian very much enjoyed this podcast with Marvelous Mike Mayberry!

Here's a little sumpin' sumpin'. This is an 1883 lithograph "map" of Prescott. It's the best the WRH has come up with that shows the general area--it's hard to pinpoint the exact building that area was crammed with them--where Doc Holliday lived in Prescott in 1880, where Sadie Mansfield (the future Josephine Earp) "worked," and the Cabinet Saloon (now the Palace), a likely gambling spot for Doc as it was the chief gambling den on the Row.
Put an Earp or Doc in the title, and they will come! Thanks so much to all who showed up for the "Doc Holliday in Prescott" presentation and were part of a great, attentive audience, who asked some awesome questions at the end. Thanks especially to the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation, Inc., to Ray Herbeck for emcee-ing, and Jan Bracciale for the fantastic photos. Most of all, thank you to Wendi Courtney, the QUEEN OF WHISKEY ROW. Because this lecture was sold out with a 50+ waiting list, we are going to do it again on July 31. Maybe with a few additions.
“Still, enough mystery, uncertainty, and controversy encompass John Henry Holliday’s life that it would be foolhardy to claim that any statement about him is definitive. . . . HE LEFT IMPRESSIONS MORE THAN EVIDENCE. [caps added]” Gary Roberts wrote that toward the end of his epic masterpiece 500+ page bio on Doc. He assisted with the article written about Doc in Prescott in the most recent True West; his humility was-awe inspiring as he knows Doc history will always be an ongoing process. It is the first real "deep dive" about Doc's time in Prescott, and there is more to come. But all Doc fans should note that what Gary wrote about him is still true--Doc is a tough study, and he requires much speculation. Dear reader, it is the WRH's hope that the TW article adds to the conversation about Doc Holliday and stimulates your thinking. Discussion is always welcome!
Apologies as the WRH does not who created this, but it is pretty damned good! Thank you!
