“Brigham Young University is committed to academic excellence in targeted graduate disciplines, traditionally focused on business and law. The First Presidency is pleased to announce the decision now to create a medical school at BYU. A major focus will be on international health issues affecting members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Church’s worldwide humanitarian efforts.
“Plans for this medical school are underway, and specific target dates will be announced as they are set. It is envisioned that unlike many medical schools, the BYU medical school will be focused on teaching with research in areas of strategic importance to the Church. In time the school will draw students from within and outside the United States.
“The BYU medical school will not create its own hospital or hospital system. BYU and Intermountain Health are discussing a mutually beneficial clinical relationship. Also, it is anticipated that the medical school will seek collaborative relationships with various entities in Utah, including the University of Utah.”
—The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Between 1840 and 1890, nearly 90,000 Latter-day Saints immigrated to America. The stories of these seagoing Saints are often overshadowed by tales of their arduous trek across the plains.
Fred E. Woods, BYU professor of Church history and doctrine, is determined to keep these stories of the Saints' ocean voyages alive.
For nearly three decades, Woods and a team of colleagues, students and missionaries have collected sources and documented the experiences of convert immigrants to America in an interactive database, "Saints by Sea."
The Saints by Sea website contains information about all known Latter-day Saint immigrant voyages, including names of passengers and first-hand accounts. Through a collaboration with FamilySearch and the BYU Library, visitors are guided to the ship on which their ancestors traveled to the United States, accompanied by first-hand accounts that vividly detail the voyage.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen my students so happy and so engaged in learning,” said BYU public health professor Jim Johnston. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to just sit back and listen to them talk about the experiences they’re having here, their love for the people, their desire to use the science to make the world a better place. It’s like the lights have come on.”

Not many people would ever say the words, “I’m super honored that you named this worm after me,” and mean it. Then again, not many people are BYU biology professor Byron Adams.
As he’s inched along his academic trail, Adams has introduced many students to his love of nematodes and found ways to get as many of them as possible — more than 100 — to carry out field work collecting the worms and lab work analyzing and studying the creatures. One particular student, an undergraduate named Adler Dillman (class of 2006), learned to love nematodes too.
Dillman, now a full-time professor at the University of California, Riverside, has discovered a brand-new species of nematode, and he’s decided to name it after his BYU mentor, Byron J. Adams.
