Today, the NC House and Senate voted to override Governor Cooper’s vetoes of HB 808 (a youth gender-affirming care ban), SB 49 (a “Don’t Say Gay” bill), and HB 574 (a trans sports ban). They will now become law.
Our heart breaks for the many people, particularly trans youth and their families, whose lives will be harmed by these cruel laws. And we’re enraged by the hostile disregard to our communities displayed by the Legislature. Trans kids deserve better.
The General Assembly passed these bills in the face of vociferous and highly motivated opposition, including thousands of letters, phone calls, testimonies, and protests. You all showed up, making your voice heard loud and clear – and we’re so profoundly grateful. We know that our youth in North Carolina are safer because there are so many motivated advocates and allies in our communities. And we’re infuriated by the disrespect and disregard shown for the people of North Carolina by this body in passing these bills over such committed opposition.
In light of the passage of HB 808, we wanted to highlight our partnership with the Campaign for Southern Equality for the Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project (STYEP). STYEP helps out families affected by youth gender-affirming care bans, through direct grant support for travel, patient navigation, supporting organizations serving these folks, and more. Get help here: https://southernequality.org/NCResources/
With the ban on gender-affirming care for youth becoming law in North Carolina, it’s crucial that we make sure our youth can still get the care they need. If you’re able, we encourage you to donate to support STYEP’s work.
Donate Here: https://southernequality.org/supporttransyouth/
We’ll also be hosting a town hall next Monday with our partners about the future of trans care after these overrides.
RSVP Here: https://southernequality.org/nc-townhall-aug/
We’ll have more resources in coming days and weeks, filling folks in on how they can protect themselves, their families and their communities. And we know that we’ll keep on fighting, even in the face of attacks. Our people are powerful and resilient, even when they shouldn’t have to be.

LGBTQ+ parents often face discrimination based on societal prejudices and stereotypes, including biased assumptions about their ability to provide a nurturing and stable family environment. They may encounter challenges in accessing adoption services, facing legal barriers to establishing parental rights, and experiencing social stigma that can lead to marginalization, exclusion, and unequal treatment within various spheres of life, such as education, healthcare, and housing.
Solving discrimination against LGBTQ+ parents requires a multi-faceted approach that includes legal protections, social acceptance, and educational initiatives.
