Insulin resistance affects 88 percent of Americans to some degree. Ninety percent of people who have it are not diagnosed and have no clue they have it.

Hacking your blood sugar and insulin is the best way to live a long, healthy life.

A prominent Harvard cardiologist once said that if you found a group of 100­ year ­olds with perfectly clean arteries, they would have one thing in com­mon: They would be insulin ­sensitive, and their cells would require very little insulin to manage blood sugar.

Most doctors never check fasting insulin levels or glucose levels after a sugar load. Want a perfect test of how you are aging? This is it.

How does insulin resistance happen?

Simple: When you overeat starch and sugars in any form, your pancreas pumps out loads of insulin. Your cells become resistant to its effects, meaning more and more insulin is required to keep your blood sugar normal. Until it can’t, and then you get type 2 diabe­tes and a host of other problems, like increased belly fat, muscle loss, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and brain damage.

We eat an average of 152 pounds of sugar and 133 pounds of flour per person every year. Overall, processed food makes up 60 percent of our calories. No won­der half of Americans over age 60 have insulin resistance. It’s happening to younger folks too. Kids as young as three years old now have type 2 diabetes.

Over time, reducing starch and sugar, and possibly even removing them altogether for a length of time, will make you insulin­ sensitive. Then, you can ease back into eating starchy veggies, fruits, beans, and whole grains with greater metabolic flexibility.

We know that an impaired gut microbiome can be triggered by a number of things. ⁣⁣⁣

These include a high-sugar, high-fat, low-fiber diet; impaired immunity; use of drugs, like antibiotics, birth control pills, and estrogen; and psychological stress.⁣⁣⁣

Refined grains, and highly processed foods convert to sugar when we eat them and SUGAR is what FEEDS the bad bacteria. Anti-inflammatory medications, acid-blockers and antibiotics have been proven to lower the biodiversity of the gut flora. ⁣⁣⁣

In a study published in Clinical microbiology and infection showed that the biodiversity was significantly lower in the participants taking more than one of these medications. ⁣⁣⁣

You can start healing your gut by first removing the bad and adding in the good stuff. ⁣⁣⁣

Focus on fibrous foods such as cruciferous vegetables, berries, garlic, onions, lentils, nuts and seeds, avocado oil, and olive oil. And supplement with probiotics. ⁣
