Education Abroad Student Spotlight!
Name: Liam Kaune
Major: Recreation and Parks Administration/ Spanish
Class year: 2024
Hometown: Fort Knox
Describe your Education Abroad program(s):
I traveled to Granada, Spain with Arcos Abroad. I took 6 credit hours of Spanish intensive courses and lived with a host family. Additionally, the program provided cultural excursions for the students.
Is this a good program for other students in your major?
Most definitely! This type of immersion is invaluable to any student trying to learn Spanish. The program and university did a good job of evaluating students and ensuring they were placed at the correct level so they could get the most out of the program.
Was this your first time abroad? If not, what other countries had you previously traveled to?
I lived in Germany for 5 years and have had the opportunity to travel a fair amount. However, this was my first time in Spain.
How do you feel that you benefited from studying abroad?
I believe that I became more well-rounded by experiencing such a different culture and my language skills improved exponentially because of my time in contact with the language.
How do you think this experience will impact your future plans?
This experience has shown me what I need to work on in order to keep improving. Additionally, it has helped me narrow down where I would like to work after graduation.
How did the experience differ from your expectations?
I expected the Spanish culture to be more similar to the UK or US but it is completely different. Spain is a unique blend of cultures and very little could prepare you for that.
Favorite thing about studying abroad?
Getting the opportunity to connect with and talk to individuals from various languages and cultures was a huge privilege.
Suggestions for future students?
I recommend anyone try to study abroad. Even if you are not familiar with the language of a particular country, there is more than likely something for you to learn.
Anything you'd like to add?
"Pepas" is a top tier song and nobody can change my mind.
Our guides for bilingual students in four different languages are finally printed and ready to be distributed!
