This course explores how racism works--in our political institutions, in our economic opportunities, in our cities, in our education system, in our science and technology, in our criminal justice system, in our media and popular culture, in our ways of thinking about and seeing the world around us. It examines strategies for dismantling racist institutions and practices annd challenges students to develop anti-racist alternatives.

"The Performance of Memorialization: Politics of Memory and Memory--Making at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys."
Dr. Robinson's talk will discuss the intersection of race, memory-making, Black childhood, and the U.S. criminal justice system.
Dr. Grace D. Gipson will be moderating.
Dr. Kaniqua Robinson is an applied cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on race, memory, and the U.S. criminal justice system. Prior to joining Furman University in 2021, Kaniqua received her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in 2018 and was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Her current research centers on the public memorization and the silencing of the Black experience at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, a reform school in Florida. Kaniqua employs ethnographic methods in her work on the politics of memory and how Black communities experience and actively resist racial inequalities.

We are excited to share that the VCU board of visitors approved a request to rename the Department of African American Studies building! The building will now be known as Gabriel's House after the leader of an 1800 slave rebellion in Richmond.
