Jack Singal, associate professor of physics, along with Richard Bradley, a senior scientist and senior research engineer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), received $589,939 in multi-year research funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The research project will result in a new map focused on the sky brightness in radio waves. The map will be the first large-scale measurement of the actual absolute brightness level of diffuse radio emission in more than 40 years, rather than a comparison of brightness in different regions of the sky as has been typical.
University of Richmond Astrophysicist Jack Singal Awarded Nearly 600K NSF Grant for Groundbreaking Radio Sky Astronomy Project National Science Foundation funding will support research that will result in a new map focused on the sky brightness in radio waves.
Music professor Andy McGraw has been awarded a Fulbright Teaching Grant to explore the intersection of music, culture, and technology in Indonesia.
Through his Fulbright support, McGraw will teach two courses at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Surakarta — one focused on analyzing music recordings using digital techniques and another on analyzing local Indonesian music scenes using digital humanities tools. These courses draw upon previous research trips to Indonesia during which he recorded traditional music performances using a custom recording system.
Music Professor Awarded Fulbright Teaching Grant to Explore Intersection of Music, Culture, and Technology in Indonesia Andy McGraw is an ethnomusicologist with expertise in Southeast Asian traditional and experimental music, intercultural performance, and rhythm analysis.

Stephanie Spera, University of Richmond Dept of Geography, Environment & Sustainability professor, has been awarded a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant for research in Brazil’s Cerrado Frontier.
The Land Cover/Land Use Change grant supports a joint research project in collaboration with the University of Vermont. Spera, an expert on climate change and land use, will coordinate the satellite-based mapping of agricultural land-use in this area and will assist in analyzing the data to better understand the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of land-cover changes.
