Fifth Army bids farewell to LTG John R. Evans!
This morning, Deputy Commanding General Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman assumed command of U.S. Army North. This transition marks a continued commitment to defending our homeland, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring readiness to meet any challenge.
The are now in full swing, and the .S. Army has a winner of its own. .S. Army World Class Athlete Program CPT Samantha Sullivan was our first to compete and comes home with a Bronze Medal in Women’s Rugby. For those who did not see the finish to the 3rd place game against Australia-- it was epic! Team covered the entire length of the field and took the lead as time expired, earning the Bronze medal in an exciting finish. Keep an eye out for SPC Kamal Bey on 6-7 August during the Men’s 77kg Greco-Roman Wrestling competition, and SSG Leonard Korir on 10 August for the Marathon.
American from the U.S. military’s premier Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives ( ) command participated in a exercise with the Mexican Army in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico, June 24 - 28. Soldiers and Army civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command deploy from 19 bases in 16 states to confront and defeat the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations. The Chemical Company Soldiers were among the approximately 220 U.S. troops and 300 troops from the Mexican Armed Forces who participated in the annual exercise.

The new barracks are open on Joint Base San Antonio!
A brand-new facility built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters in partnership with the 502d ABW Command Team was officially opened during a celebratory ribbon cutting here, on June 27, 2024.

"The best thing about the new rooms is that the common area is usable," said Spc. Ben Wickham. "We've got enough space. There's a full size sink and vanity. We've got enough plugs for the toaster oven and coffee maker. We've got a full stove top I can actually use instead of it just being a microwave and 2 square feet of space."
The building is three stories and can accommodate 192 personnel. Each room consists of a shared kitchenette and bathroom, with two private bedrooms, and on each floor, there are two laundry rooms along with a communal day room.
The priority is to increase the quality of life for our service members and this building is a great example of it.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. John R. Evans, commanding general, presents Col. Alejandro Flores, the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) liaison officer to U.S. Army North, with the Meritorious Service Medal on Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, July 12, 2024. Col. Flores was awarded for his accomplishments at which includes the increased integration of exercises like Jaguar Strike and Joint Specialized Exercise at Mexico’s Centro Nacional de Adiestramiento. Col. Flores facilitated major exercises to include Fuerzas Amigas 2023 and Fuerzas Amigas 2024. Lastly, he advanced the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement (ACSA) between U.S. Northern Command and Headquarters that will yield long-term benefits for both Militaries. Our growing partnership with Mexico fosters increased military capacity and security along our shared border, aids military-to-military training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response efforts.

What is a birthday without a cake! CW5 Sam Ngaropo (Chief Kiwi) hosted a momentous cake cutting for the 106th birthday of the Warrant Officer Corps during the Warrant Officer Professional Development Symposium.
The symposium featured Retired CW5 and Gold Star Mother, Candy Martin, Army Combined Arms Center Command Sergeant Major, CSM Stephen Helton, our very own Commanding General, LTG John Evans, as well as a special appearance from Retired General Robert Brown. As the Warrant Officer Corps celebrates their birthday, we all recognize the level of technical expertise that our warrants provide to the field. "The warrant officer provides a critical capability that is necessary to our mission as our Army continues to learn, grow, and develop daily," said GEN Brown as he celebrated with some of Fort Sam Houston's Warrant Officers.

CW5 Sam Ngaropo (Chief Kiwi) hosted a birthday dinner for the 106th anniversary of the Warrant Officer Corps and bittersweet farewell to the U.S. Army North commander, Lt. Gen. John R. Evans.
Over the course of the event, many attendees, including San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenburg, celebrated over a century of leadership, expertise, and dedication from the Warrant Officer Corps. Since 1918, warrant officers have been the innovative specialists of emerging technology, skillful advisors, effective leaders and play a vital role in the overall success of military missions and tasking.
“This dinner tonight is a dinner of Army warrant officers, and we’re 80 strong tonight to include spouses. It is a lot of your friends and mates here tonight simply to say thank you. Thank you for being an outstanding commanding general. Thank you for being an outstanding army leader. And really thank you for being just a great human being,” said Chief Kiwi during the opening remarks of the 106th warrant officer birthday dinner.

U.S. Army North and JBSA-FSH units celebrate the 106th birthday of the Warrant Officer Corps and wish a farewell to the U.S. Army North commander, Lt. Gen. John R. Evans.
"I'm happy to see all of the service members here ready to have a great morning on Fort Sam Houston. This is my last opportunity to command a parade field like this. Later in the day when everyone wakes up and we check social media, they will all be talking about the sounds of cadence and cannons bright and early this morning," said LTG Evans before kicking off the 106th Warrant Officer birthday fun run.

The retention team recently concluded the Department of the Army led Retention Training.

The goal was to train and certify them as Retention . Such comprehensive training ensures that company-level Retention NCOs are equipped with the latest retention knowledge, empowering Soldiers and leaders with the necessary skills and information.
MSG Yarbrough presented both SFC Morton and SFC Smith from the Recruiting and Retention College with a plaque and a coin on behalf of LTG Evans and CSM Gan in recognition of their exceptional commitment to training our newest Retention NCOs.

Members of the U.S. and Mexican militaries train together during Fuerzas Amigas 2024 in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico to strengthen partnerships and increase operational compatibility in the event of a cross-border humanitarian crisis. Over the course of the exercise, members of the U.S. and Mexican militaries practiced extraction techniques, practiced using recovering equipment, and transported simulated earthquake victims.

The Legion of Merit was presented to SGM Sean Gerner as he prepares for his transition from the organization. The Commanding General's Coin of Excellence was presented to Richard Kaulfers, Michael Ulstead, Jon Palmer, Melinda Woldeit and CPT Kristin Capes.

Today marked the transition of authority and responsibility for our Headquarters Support Company. Both the Commander and First Sergeant relinquished their responsibilities during a combined Change of Command/Change of Responsibility Ceremony. Vacating the commander seat is CPT Dylan Yates who passed the unit colors to CPT Monica Santoyo. Vacating the First Sergeant seat is 1SG David Rowland who passed the unit colors to 1SG Eric Steinman.
Our company is a building block which provides the essential manpower, expertise, and operational capability needed to accomplish missions. We’re excited to see how the new leadership will positively influence and enable the mission.

Yesterday, U. S. Army North (Fifth Army) bid farewell to the outgoing Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Commander, LTC Mark B. Atkinson and had the pleasure of welcoming LTC Julie L. Woellner to the team. Under LTC Atkinson's guidance, our battalion has achieved great success, and we can't wait to see what new heights LTC Woellner will take us to.

to our training exercise , where we work as a team and check one another’s work to ensure that the focus is simulating a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear disaster scenario. This scenario validates our ability to our military forces in short-notice and no-notice circumstances at the request of civil authorities. Our objective is to save lives, alleviate suffering and protect property following a catastrophic CBRN event.
LTG Evans attended the 2024 San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) graduation ceremony as a keynote speaker.
With over 200 residents and fellows from 58 diverse physician and allied health specialty programs, 18 research awards and 8 merit awards were presented.
LTG Evans shared his experiences with military medicine as an Army Special Operations Aviator with a 35-year military career. He shared encouraging words, informing the audience of the extreme care and dedication that military medicine professionals have for those they take under their care. Additionally, LTG Evans honored the graduates for this milestone in their careers, noting that their contributions to the nation will be exceptional.

The task force can go anywhere in the continental United States at a moments notice when responding to various incidents that include wildfires, earthquakes, and hurricanes. While responding, the task force can provide a variety of capabilities.
The Vibrant Response exercise further enhanced their ability to defend the homeland and respond to all-hazards incidents.
