San Antonio River Authority SARA, created in 1937, is one of many such active river authorities in the State of Texas.

In 1917, the voters of Texas, recognizing the necessity of developing and conserving the State’s water resources and inspired by devastating floods of 1913 and 1914, passed a Constitutional amendment allowing the Legislature to create special purpose political subdivisions of the State to serve regional areas, generally coincidental with river basins and to be generally known as river authorities. Its jurisdiction covers 3,658 square milesβ€”all of Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties.

🌿 At the end of May, Lee Marlowe, Collen Brownlow, and Shaun Donovan represented the San Antonio River Authority at the first annual Network for Engineering With Nature (NEWN) Partner Symposium in St. Augustine, FL. 🌊 Collen presented on the Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration project and erosion control work, Lee discussed simple monitoring techniques for urban nature-based infrastructure projects, and Shaun served on a panel for biodiversity! πŸ¦‹

🌱 NEWN, established in 2019, is an active community of researchers, practitioners, and educators addressing major infrastructure challenges while creating opportunities that align ecological, social, and engineering processes to achieve multiple societal benefits. One of the NEWN pillars, "Inform," is advanced through the publication of Engineering with Nature Atlases. The Mission Reach project was recently highlighted in Issuu Atlas Volume 3!!

πŸ’š Today, our Mission Reach staff collaborated with BIO-WEST, Inc. to install vegetated Coir Logs along the San Antonio riverbanks. These eco-friendly logs play a crucial role in stabilizing the banks of the San Antonio River while fostering native aquatic vegetation like spike rush, water-fern, and many others.

πŸŒΏπŸ’§ This ongoing effort has successfully supported over 1600 feet of riverbank reclamation and ecological lift so far in areas along the Mission Reach Project. Proud to be making a positive impact in our watershed!
