Our San Antonio is a city of gastronomy! That means that we work to strengthen our city’s culinary legacy as a meeting of cultures. 🍽️

🏛️ UNESCO is a UN organization that works to promote world peace with arts, sciences and culture, and they’ve gone around the world to designate hundreds of cities as creative cities, San Antonio being one of them.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 There are many organizations here in town working to preserve our city’s heritage – whether it’s seen in a building or in art, felt in dance, or tasted in food. Many are doing the hard work of making sure our heritage known.

🔁 REPOST: Check out this activation that UTSA Libraries and Maestra Veronica Castillo hosted a wonderful dinner showcasing Cacao, Maiz, and Cocina Mestiza traditions. A blessing and performance were held by Danza Azteca.

🎨 Verónica Castillo is an internationally acclaimed artist from Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, México. Her exhibits have achieved national and international recognition, from the Smithsonian in Washington DC to the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago to the Museo Amparo in Puebla, Mexico. She is the owner of E.V.A. (Ecos y Voces de Arte), a gallery on the Southside of San Antonio that offers the space and support for various forms of cultural art to thrive. For more information on E.V.A, visit: www.veronicacastillo.art/

Make sure to follow for future events supporting their Arturo Infante Almeida UTSA Art Collection Endowment.

Check out one of our Legacy Businesses! ✨

Dixie Flag & Banner Company, founded in 1958 by Henry P. Van de Putte, Sr., has grown from a small home-based business to one of the most respected and trusted flag companies in the country. Originally known as Dixie Decorators, Dixie manufactured the flags for Hemisfair 1968 that decorated the streets of San Antonio.

In 1974, the company moved to the 1900 block of Pan Am Expressway, and in 1995 built their three-story home, which includes their offices, manufacturing facilities, and a retail store.

Dixie Flag not only creates work for organizations and companies like the San Antonio Spurs, Valero Alamo Bowl, and the San Antonio Fiesta Commission, but also for local non-profits, churches, schools, and the military. They also manufactured flags for the last five presidential inaugurations.

The Legacy Business Program highlights city businesses that give San Antonio its unique character. Do you know a business that deserves recognition? Nominate them! Here’s how:

: A house in the Monte Vista Historic District, once on the verge of demolition by neglect, was revived by a local contractor with an eye for historic details. And now it’s under contract after only six days on the market! Anthony Chen repaired existing wood windows, built new wood windows as needed, reinstalled existing siding or replaced it in kind where it couldn’t be salvaged, and even recreated the sweet floral gable tail design when original tails had to be replaced. Anthony worked closely with OHP staff on our design review team to address issues uncovered as work progressed and used the Historic Design Guidelines to shape his project goals and outcomes. In the end, retention of these historic details not only kept some old-growth wood out of the landfill—it also made the property that much more appealing to would-be buyers in the market for a historic home that retains its original charm.

🏡Aluminum Clad Windows🏡

Where are aluminum clad windows appropriate?
🎇New Construction
🎇Additions
🎇Rear Accessories

Windows used in new construction, additions, and rear accessories should be similar in appearance to those commonly found within the district in terms of size, profile, and configuration. Whole window systems should match the size of historic windows on property unless otherwise approved.
