As wraps up, we celebrate global military collaboration. Over the past week, hosted participants from 12 nations, reflecting on a journey that began with just three countries over two decades ago. This year's exercise showcased the expanding scope of , with new capabilities in cybersecurity and psychological operations added to traditional military training.

Deputy Commissioner Felix Kirven of Senan Panamá said it best: "Participating in represents the dynamic change that our world is continuously undergoing."

A Symbol of Sacrifice

The Purple Heart, distinctive due to its rarity, is the oldest American military medal with a unique history. The is not awarded for valor, courage, bravery, or heroism. It is awarded for .

It is estimated that about 1.9 million Purple Hearts have been awarded since it was initially awarded to three Revolutionary War Soldiers in 1783. The stories are different, but they do have one thing in common: the recipient was wounded or killed in order to be awarded the Purple Heart.

Today, we highlight two U.S. Army South Soldiers who earned the oldest and most recognizable award in the U.S. military award inventory: Sgt. 1st Class Warren Davies and Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Prout.

PANAMAX 2024 is officially underway!

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM)-sponsored, multinational, biennial command post exercise (CPX) aimed at reinforcing and enhancing the long-term security of the Panama Canal and the Western Hemisphere takes place from Aug. 5-14 at various locations across the United States.

“Collectively, we will go through the next eight days together and make our area of responsibility (AOR), our region, stronger and better with what we all are going to bring to this exercise,” Maj. Gen. Phil Ryan, U.S. Army South commander, said as he welcomed hundreds of joint and multinational participants who will take part in the exercise at Fort Sam Houston. “All of us bring a wealth of information and experience to this AOR and to what we are doing here.”

is hosting both the Multinational Forces South and Chilean-led Combined Force Land Component Command at Fort Sam Houston, bringing together participants from the United States, Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru.

Earlier today, Brig. Gen. Phil Ryan, commander of was promoted to major general. The ceremony was led by fellow Lt. Gen. John Evans, the commander of U. S. Army North (Fifth Army), who praised Ryan’s exceptional leadership and contributions.

“I’ve had the opportunity to watch Phil [Ryan] from a very early age and see the fine caliber of officer he was, his capabilities, and how he continued to excel,” Evans added. “It means a lot to me to be able to do this. It is incredibly humbling and thankfully, very special for me to be able to promote a friend and a fellow Night Stalker.”

Prior to arriving to in June, Ryan has served with distinction in numerous roles, including as commander of Special Operations Joint Task Force-Levant, Operation INHERENT RESOLVE in Jordan.

He continues to inspire and lead with dedication. His promotion is a testament to his unwavering commitment and outstanding service.

, earlier this month, service members assigned to the 2nd Civil Affairs Support Teams and the 24th Civil Support Teams (WMD) trained with their Brazilian army counterparts for Operation Maracanã, a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) training exercise.

Operation Maracanã simulated a response to a potential CBRN incident during a soccer match at the Maracanã Stadium, in Brazil. These exercises and exchanges are crucial for maintaining strong relationships with our partner nations, with many more planned for the future. 💪

The exercise enhanced the technical, procedural, and interoperability between Ejército Nacional de Colombia and 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers 🪂, demonstrating the U.S. Army’s ability to rapidly and strategically employ forces in the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility.

With a focus on pre-deployment operations, 24 allowed U.S. Army Soldiers to enhance their agility in a new training domain alongside partner forces. This collaboration further improved interoperability and prepared them for success in competition, crisis, and conflict.

, July 28th, is known as Buffalo Soldiers Day. This day is designed to honor the U.S. Army Buffalo Soldiers in recognition of their duties to our nation back starting in 1866. On April 5, 1867, the 9th Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers arrived in San Antonio, and the unit set up camp near the San Pedro Springs.
