There’s a village in Japan called Nagoro that is mainly populated by creepy dolls. Its inhabitants either have died or abandoned their homes & businesses in search for a better life. The village formerly had about 300 inhabitants but now it’s down to about 30.

In the early 2000s, Tsukimi Ayano decided to re-populate the village with over 300 hundred life size dolls, each representing a former resident. She had left the village herself but came back to take care of her dying father. After his death, she decided to stay and started creating the straw dolls, dressed in old clothes.

Now, tourists visit the village and find the abandoned school filled with dolls waiting for class to begin. There are dolls working in the field, fishing in the river, getting married at the church or just sitting along the road starring at you.

They provide hours of entertainment and teach lessons about friendship and sharing. They help get through sad days by allowing us to express our true feelings. They play a very important role in people’s lives.
