On September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his parish in
Dolores, yelling for Mexican independence from Spain. This became known as El Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores). Even though Father Hidalgo’s revolution failed, it ignited the revolutionary spirit in Mexico. In 1825 September 16th became recognized as the official day of Mexican Independence, also known as
Diecisèis de Septiembre.
In San Antonio the celebrations for it required multiple committees to organize properly. Jose Antonio Navarro openly supported Mexican independence from Spain so it should be no surprise that he served on one of the committees, the one in charge of organizing the parade and floats for the celebration. Much like Navarro, the citizens of San Antonio continue to celebrate Diecisèis de Septiembre with celebrations and parades.
