Land Heritage Institute (LHI) is 1200 acres of open space being developed as a living land museum on Second Saturday only June through August.
Open Second and Third Saturdays of the month September through May.
We are open this Saturday, from 8 am to 4 pm. All trails open (including Lasso Loop) unless we receive excessive rain in which case we will close river trails for safety reasons. A big thank you to our Trailmasters and Cactus Patch Gals for stepping up volunteer efforts to assist with management, maintenance and operations, looking forward to the new year! Reminder, now is the time to renew Trailmasters membership for 2024. We will accept renewals for 2024 until January 15, 2024, after that date you will have to join for remainder of 2024 and 2025. If you are not a member, you can join now for $100 and enjoy member benefits for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024. LHI is a 501 (c) 3 Non Profit so all donations are tax deductible. The winter grass is beautiful and the wildlife is easier to see since the trees have lost a lot of leaves. We do have some fall color in places. Come enjoy the outdoors!
Photos below are selection of artifacts donated by John & Cornelia Fleming that were originally from his grandparents John & Cora Watson and were housed at the Presnall Watson Homestead. The plan is for these artifacts eventually be displayed there.
A big thank you to Darryl Ohlenbusch and his 3rd & 4th year architectural design studio from the School of Architecture at UTSA. They shared their design ideas and talents to help visualize future Land Heritage Institute projects that included a new open air pavilion, interpretive center, bunkhouses, caretakers residence and front entry gate. It was a pleasure to visit with them yesterday and provide helpful input on their final project. Also, thanks to my former architectural firm LPA for providing support in the form of architectural review from their experienced architects and landscape architects. Below are photos of a sample of the projects and the students that produced this outstanding work!
Thanks to my nephew Clayton, we were able to re route Moccasin Trail around a huge Live Oak tree that fell across the trail early last summer. Not perfect but is now easily passable on foot and horseback. Needs a little Bobcat work and maybe 8’ or so concrete bag retaining wall to make it safer to drive the tractor and Mule down, but all in all pretty good. This opens up Lass Loop and Persimmon Trails to the uplands. Thank you Clayton!
Re Posted from Cactus Patch Gals Thx! I counted 36 volunteers in attendance yesterday. Many hands make light work. Oh, the guy in the middle of the first photo looks totally lost…
Big thanks to Trailmasters Cactus Patch Gals and others who came out today to help groom the trails. Big thanks also to Peggy and Linda for getting the food ready and served. We endured a little drizzle and a stuck truck to get a lot of trimming done. Also enjoyed Fajitas and sides for lunch. Trailmasters rock! See everyone in a couple weeks. If anyone took a picture, send it t me or post and I will post on LHI page.

Mark holding the Brand Certificate and John Fleming holding the actual branding iron from the John Watson Esq. Ranch. Branding iron along with dozens of priceless artifacts from the Watson Family donated by John & Cornelia Fleming. A special day in the history and life of the Land Heritage Institute.
A Texas size Thank You to John & Cornelia Fleming who drove all the way from Boise, Idaho to hand deliver artifacts collected by John from his childhood growing up as the grandson of John & Cora Watson. John, as a youth, spent summers with his Grandfather and grandmother Watson at the farm in what is now known as the Presnall Watson House during the 40’s and 50’s. Thanks to Chris & Kelly Hurd (and Hazel) for letting me join their Eclipse Party yesterday at LHI. Clouds parted just in time to get a good look at ring of fire! The cattle were laying down in the pen, the birds were quiet and stopped flying, it was as if all Gods creation stopped in awe of the moment.
Attention all Trail Master members!

A big thank you again to AC & Diana Caballero and Kevin & Elena Cline for their help last week. They smoothed out trails where erosion had made them difficult to traverse. Take a look!
Just a reminder, LHI will be open 2nd & 3rd Saturday’s on Oct 14 & 21 from 8 am to 4 pm. Please be vigilant regarding Rattlesnakes, with the cooler weather they will be active. I stepped right over one today at the STREAM Center right next to the water trough while we were fixing a leak. He is now decorating a nearby fence hopefully doing his post life job of attracting more rain.
GREAT. BIG THANK YOU to AC & Diane Caballero for helping out at LHI this morning…next time you are riding down the service road to Ladybug or Mesquite Pass trails and you notice how smooth the road is, remember to thank Diane and her husband. AC. They worked this morning with the tractor and box blade to smooth out the road to cover the big cracks and fill the ditch that had developed down one side of the road. Apparently, more to come! Thanks again AC & Diane👍👌🤗

Alan and I went by the Land Heritage Institute yesterday for a bit and, near the headquarters, I got a photo of a Common Spotted Whiptail that was probably at least 8 or 9" long. It's only the second one I've ever seen. The other was year in Palo Duro Canyon. Whiptails eat insects and are generally active during the daytime.
