Which means that they have multiple estrus cycles during the breeding season. As the amount of daylight begins to increase at the winter solstice (yesterday), the reproductive cycle of intact females kicks into gear, and most will go into heat by late January. A female cat will keep coming back into heat every 1 to 2 weeks until she gets pregnant, or the amount of daylight decreases (October). The feline gestation period is about 63 days, so the first kittens of the season will start arriving in late March.

NOW is the ideal time time to spay and neuter feral and stray cats to get ahead of kitten season and end the breeding cycle before it starts.

Meet Mighty! He laid on the pavement for 24 hours while his finder called rescues asking for help. We were the only one that showed up. Mighty was only 72g and was enough of a preemie he didn’t have fur on his legs and his eyes were tightly shut. Thanks to our fosters his eyes are open and he weights almost 200g a week later. We need to raise funds for Mighty and future kittens. We cannot take in any more kittens or cats until we’ve replenished our vet fund.

Each cat and kitten costs us at least $200 for spay/neuter, microchip, FVRCP, de-wormers, and flea meds. That doesnt include food, kitten milk replacer, litter etc. It also doesn’t include more emergency medical costs (which are about 1 out of 4).

We are on an intake hold until we can raise $1000.

Searching for his purrfect forever home, “Cyrus”—this very handsome gray and white long-haired, 2 years old neutered kitty boy, is looking for a place to call home forever. He LOVES catnip! He LOVES other cats! He LOVES playing with the wand toys and his teddy bear. He follows his foster mama around to make sure she does everything right at the right time during the day (including doling out the catnip).

His foster mama has given him the job of being the therapy cat for her foster kittens because he is such a good friend to all other kitties – he especially loves kittens with disabilities. He was very sad when little Winky the kitten was adopted after his eye removal. Cyrus loves kittens and showing them the ropes.

Cyrus is the last of the six kitties we took on from OC Animal Care – they were part of a animal cruelty hoarding case (one of 83 cats and one dog to be rescued). Cyrus is the last because he is more reserved. He loves to be involved in everything, and he’s learning to allow pets and that laying on the couch next to his foster family is nice. He doesn’t do anything naughty, but he isn’t a lap kitty, yet. He needs to go to a home with a patient adopter and another brave kitty or two to take his cues from. His adopter will truly be saving a life – until he went to his foster home he was scared and miserable and he has blossomed. We are looking for a similarly quiet home with at least one other kitty, no dogs, and no small children.

We will waive the adoption fee to a great indoor-only home (remember you need to have another kitty for him to play with). Cyrus is neutered, up to date with his FVRCP and rabies shots, tested negative for FeLV and FIV, has had a health checkup, and is microchipped. Plus, he’s been treated for fleas, dewormed, and yep, he’s litter box trained.

Cyrus is fostering in San Diego, so don’t be shy—text or call us at 858-883-4222 to set up a time to meet him at his foster home. For more details, check out JoannesFurryFriends.com.

*We are a 501(c)(3) so all adoption fees and donations are tax deductible.

Our great big marshmallow, Dallas, is ready for adoption and his next forever home! Devastatingly, Dallas had a human mama who loved him very much, but she went into cardiac arrest during surgery and didn’t make it back to her sweet boy. 😢 Her ex-husband “isn’t a cat guy,” so he kept her dogs but not Dallas. We need to find this wonderful, sweet, easygoing, and brave boy a new home full of love and belly rubs. 🏠❤️

If you haven’t met Dallas, you should! 🐱 This big marshmallow is just an awesome kitty. He purrs the second you look at him. He is as soft and fluffy as a marshmallow! He always wants to be in your lap or rubbing against your legs. He just LOVES to be loved and to give love. 💕 Just three years old, he can play with the best of them, but is much easier going than a kitten.

He is good with other kitties (preferably younger kitties that want to play as much as he does), polite dogs, and would be happy in a house with as many hands as possible to love on him. 🐾 For the right indoor only home we will waive the adoption fee. Dallas is neutered and has had an FVRCP/rabies vaccine and a comprehensive vet exam. He is located in San Diego, so don’t hesitate to contact us at 858-883-4222 to arrange a meeting with him at his foster home. 📞 For more details, visit JoannesFurryFriends.com.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, all adoption fees and donations are tax-deductible. 📝

The poor pup has been relinquished to the Carlsbad Shelter - I’m sure she is traumatized. If you are looking to adopt her stray hold should come off this weekend.

Please share if in Del Mar/Rancho Santa Fe CA!!! Found in Del Mar/Rancho Santa Fe today 8/12. Not chipped- our foster bought the harness and leash - not wearing a collar. Very sweet. Please share. The pup is safe and indoors. Super sweet. None of the shelters wanted to hold the sweet pup…. Sigh. We are not a dog rescue (but we save possums, turtles, tortoises, mice, butterflies, hummingbirds etc). - but one of our wonderful kitty fosters rescued the pup. Direct 858-883-4222

Margo and I are very sad to lose the second of her two geriatric lovelies today. Garnet and Onyx were owner abandoned into our rescue three years ago. Already seniors, they were not suitable for adoption. However, Margo showered them with love and they gave so much love to her in return.

Onyx crossed the bridge 2.5 months ago and Garnet missed her greatly. Thanks to Dr. Joe Rosenberg’s at home euthanasia services (Go In Peace SD), Garnet passed very peacefully and quickly at home today.

She spent the morning looking out the window from her cat tree. It was definitely time, this morning she had been struggling to breathe and couldn’t keep her breakfast down.

She had a very peaceful journey across the rainbow bridge and I’m sure she and Onyx are probably sniffing each other suspiciously already.

Senior cats are not easy, but when you adopt a kitten, please remember you adopted a forever cat - not just a kitten.

Let’s talk about the reproductive cycle of female cats… please share.

Cats can get preggers as early as four months old. They can get pregnant with their brothers. They can get pregnant with more than one Tom over a two week period.

Cats can be spayed/neutered as young as 2lbs/8 weeks old.

A good spay should not include stitches that need to be removed. If your vet needs to put in a zipper you need a different vet.

TNR vets use dissolving glue and cats don’t need a cone (unless they are lickers, generally).

Cats can be safely spay/aborted. At no point is it more dangerous for mama than the act of giving birth. It is just hard on us that love kitties. But she doesn’t know why her body is behaving so weirdly.

We used to not spay abort friendly mamas that were far along - in the early days of our rescue. We have learned the world doesn’t need more kittens. There will always be another litter that needs our help that has already been born. Then we can’t take on those living kittens and they die a rotten death on the street, because we are full with a mama and kittens.

If your vet tells you that a cat cannot be spayed when pregnant, in heat or lactating you need a new vet. A cat can be spayed when lactating and/or in heat.

A cat nursing kittens will most likely go in to heat while still nursing kittens. Usually around 5-6 weeks after giving birth. She will still be lactating and she will be preggers soon.

In Southern California, cats will have 3-5 litters a year. The 5th comes in when one of her litters dies suddenly. She will go into heat very soon. So more pain and suffering.

Find the right vet and spay your cats and neuter your males as early as possible.

Crush and Fanta are looking for their forever homes! Rescued from difficult situations, these two adorable kittens are ready to bring joy to their new families.

Crush, a wonderful little girl, was rescued at only four weeks old from an overwhelmed kitten situation in San Diego. With so many mamas and kittens, it was hard to tell who belonged to whom. Orange kitties are normally boys (80% of the time), but Crush defies the odds as a beautiful orange tabby. She has a great personality and is good with other cats, as well as polite dogs and children. Crush is the darker colored orange kitten in the pictures.

Fanta, her foster sibling, was rescued at only two weeks old after being left in the hot sun. Raised as a bottle baby, Fanta has grown into a beautiful light pinky orange kitten with a loving nature. She is also good with other cats and will be good with polite dogs and children.

Both Crush and Fanta have been fixed, microchipped, vaccinated with their first FVRCP vaccines. They have also been treated for fleas, worms and parasites. Of course these sweethearts are litter box trained! Their adoption fee is $75 for one or double your fun and adopt both of them together for just $75. Kittens do best in a home with other kittens! As a 501(c)(3) organization, your adoption fee may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Located with a foster in San Diego, Fanta and Crush are eager to find their forever homes! Text or call us at 858-883-4222 to set up a meet and greet with these two at their foster home. For even more information, check out https://JoannesFurryFriends.com.

Raised in one of our first-time foster families’ homes, Coco is great with kids, dogs, and other kitties. 👶🐶🐱 His foster family’s favorite, Coco is full of personality and love. Coco Darling has been fixed, microchipped, vaccinated with his first FVRCP, flea treated, dewormed, and is, of course, litterbox trained. 🩺💉 His adoption fee is $100, and as a 501(c)(3) organization, your adoption fee may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. 📜

These two adorable siblings are looking for their forever homes. Rescued at only three weeks old from a parking lot in Mission Valley now, Ragnar and Lagertha are ready to find their new forever families. These kittens are used to being the focus of their foster's world! They are looking for the same sort of forever indoor-only home!

Ragnar has the cutest fluffiest ears you’ve ever seen and the sweetest temperament. He is very adventurous and outgoing, ready to meet new people and have new experiences! He will be first to greet you at the door when you come home from work! Ragnar is a perfect mix of play time and snoozes with his human.

Lagertha is a sweet ball of energy! A little shy at first with new people, but once she knows you she’ll be the light of your life. This little lady will play with you for hours and when it’s nap time she’ll be right in your lap ready for some ZZZs. This sweetheart will definitely be your best friend.

Both have been trained not to play with hands, are excellent at using the litter box, and are very bonded with each other. They play, groom, and snuggle with each other daily. They are a perfect pair! Both play well with other cats.

Adoption Details: Both are fixed, microchipped, vaccinated with their first FVRCP, flea treated, dewormed, and of course, litterbox trained. Their adoption fee is $100 each, or better yet, DOUBLE the joy and adopt TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! We don’t usually insist on kittens being adopted together – but the perfect situation for these two would be for them to go together as a bonded pair! Kittens flourish with a kitty companion by their side.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, your adoption fee may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Sometimes we save butterflies too… even if they aren’t furry. We try to make the world a better place. One small life in an ecosystem. We have three fosters who are also protecting and raising monarchs. Sadly … it isn’t easy. There is a reason they are “vulnerable”.

Thank you to all of our supporters and donors. Your kind words and donations make such a difference - with your help we are able to save more cats and kittens. We can't do it without your financial and emotional support. Every dollar donated and every birthday fundraiser sponsored has helped us help more!

The last few months have been very busy - we've TNR'd or rescued and adopted out more than 350 kitties in six months. Usually that would be the amount we can help over a whole YEAR.

We've struggled in the last two months with a number of significant health issues in our rescue kitties: the need for eyes to be removed in teenage kittens that came to us with irreparably damaged eyes, kitties with long-haul respiratory issues, mamas that are owned but the owners couldn't afford to fix them or care for their kittens, we lost one of our forever fosters to kidney failure after keeping her healthy for three years longer than her previous owner could have afforded, a kitten (Maisie is pictured) that developed Vestibular Syndrome after a vaccine.... the list goes on and on.

We are attaching just some of our invoices from the last two months! Just two months and our MEDICAL EXPENSES ALONE have been more than $4200! We hate to ask for donations, but if you can even spare $5 that will help us pay for our next 7 kittens spays/neuters/vaccines/microchips!

Carrot Update: Thanks to a number of people (two different temporary fosters who did a great job getting Carrot settled in), Tess Kirby (our transporter from South Dakota to South Dakota) and her future owner, Melissa Heuer in South Dakota - Carrot will have a forever home. She will stay with her current foster until August 15th and then fly to her new home in South Dakota. The veterinarian there is very knowledgeable about FeLV and has a plan in place to keep her healthy for a long time to come. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and offered great ideas and insights! It's been a rough couple of medical weeks for our kitties - but we are so thankful to have solved Carrot's future care issues!

Carrot was spayed/vaccinated/PCR tested/microchipped at our wonderful Vet's office - Pet Hospital of North Park

Our super sweet, super handsome boy, Hadas is so ready for a forever home! He makes the MOST adorable little coos, trills, meeps. He is a kitty with a very large vocabulary. He isn’t loud or demanding – he just always wants to reassure you that he is paying attention to his Hooman. His fur is soft as a bunny and he has wonder white markings and great big pretty eyes. He absolutely loves people and other cats. He would be great with kids. He most likely would end up loving a doggy buddy with a proper introduction.

His wants and needs list is pretty short: snuggles, lots of warm laps, some toys (he’s cool if you make them for him out of paper and a TP roll), someone to waive a kitty play wand around so he can chase it, and more warm laps. 😸 We just cannot say enough that this little guy is sooooooo great!🐱. Approx 8 months old, Hadas is just the easiest, best kitty. He wants to be a snuggle bug at all times – he spends most of his time on his foster mama’s lap while she works on her computer. He wants to sleep next to his human all night long. 💕

Hadas came from a very rough situation. He was part of the 40+ cat hoarding situation that we’ve been trying to process through. He was skinny and dirty. He still has sinusitis and it may never go away because of the damage that being outside in the dirt without enough nutrition has done. So he is a little sneezy – we’ve confirmed no polyp, he’s been on antibiotics and he’s been tested for all sorts of things. He is just sneezy somedays more than others. He is negative for FeLV and FIV. Like most kitties from the street his sneezing could be related calcivirus (he is positive for calci, but he’s also been vaccinated for it after he came into our care and that can show up positive forever on labs). He needs someone to give lots of love to his soft, snuggly little body.

Of course the Humane Society wouldn’t take him in, even though he was obviously so friendly. We decided we just couldn’t put him back out on the street after his neuter. He is just SUCH A GREAT KITTY! We need someone to give this sweet, sweet little man a forever Indoor ONLY home. 🎨

We’re asking for a $25 adoption fee to ensure Hadas finds a loving, indoor-only home 🏡. Hadas is neutered, up-to-date on his FVRCP + Rabies 💉, microchipped, NEGATIVE for FIV/FeLV, flea-treated, dewormed, and litter box trained 🚽.

Hadas is at our Del Mar adoption location, but we are willing to transport him throughout Southern California to a wonderful furrever home 🏠. Contact us at 858-883-4222 to arrange a meeting 🐾❤️. For more details, visit JoannesFurryFriends.com. https://joannesfurryfriends.com

Our gorgeous one-year-old polydactyl, Sophie, is ready to be adopted! 🐾 She has the biggest polydactyl toes we’ve ever seen! She has medium-length hair with a beautiful calico coat and great big green eyes. Sophie came from a large feral cat colony, but she wasn’t truly feral (just shy), and we just couldn’t bear for her to have to live out on the streets dirty, covered in mats, fleas, and twigs.

She has taken some time to adjust to hopping up on the bed and asking for pets. But she loves them so much when she decides she really has to have them. She would perhaps do best in a home without other kitties – she doesn’t fight with them, but she doesn’t seem to seek them out either (it would need to be a calm, friendly cat if she were to go to a home with another kitty). She loves to play with her toys, look out the window, and chatter at birds. She is very food motivated, which will help her adjust to her new home (food is her currency; the person who provides the food is who she trusts). She needs an experienced cat lover to continue her journey in her new life. No children under the age of 12.

We’re asking for a $45 adoption fee to ensure she finds a loving, indoor-only home. Sophie is spayed, up-to-date on her FVRCP and rabies vaccines, flea-treated, dewormed, and litter box trained. 🐾🩺

Founded in Honor of Joanne Diuri

Joanne’s Furry Friends – A Feral Feline Rescue was founded in honor of Joanne Diuri, a life-long animal lover and a hero to countless abandoned cats and kittens.

Joanne’s Furry Friends was unofficially founded in June 2017 with our first rescue and re-homing of six kittens from Delano, California. Starting with just a single foster home, no funding, and relying heavily on our friends and family, Joanne’s Furry Friends has re-homed over sixty cats and kittens. In addition to re-homing kittens, we are focused on TNR/SNR for feral adult cats in order to slow population growth for forgotten felines. It has grown through word-of-mouth, a strong presence on social media, and the dedication of the volunteers and supporters who champion its mission.

Joanne’s Furry Friends provides veterinary care, foster homes, and adoptive placement to stray cats and kittens, prioritizing those with special needs. We work to end unnecessary euthanasia and cat homelessness through educational outreach, community programs, and collaborative partnerships.

We believe that every cat, regardless of emotional or physical limitations, deserves the chance at a fulfilling and happy life. Only when a trusted veterinarian determines that a cat is in a state of incurable suffering, does Joanne’s Furry Friends relieve them of their pain through gentle and humane euthanasia. This difficult and thoughtful decision is never made in response to a lack of space, negative behaviors, or because a cat's medical needs are challenging or expensive.
