This article is so needed. Love this reality check. There is no LOOK of depression. Reach out to the ones you love.
Hello San Diego! I am thrilled to announce that I am starting a new group for Working Mothers this fall at my practice in Mission Valley. My clinical practice has had a significant following in the past few years of women in the workforce who are incredibly challenged at finding the balance that they need in the working-mother juggle. Unfortunately, I see both of these valuable areas of their life suffer as these women become overwhelmed by this unique type of stress. The focus of this group will be to provide support, education, and skills for women to be more healthy, mindful and present in their life, and to ultimately increase their sense of satisfaction and calm. I would be happy to consult with anyone who is interested to see if they are a good fit!
I hear many people in my practice confused about what depression is, resistant to the label, or not realizing that their fatigue, lack of interest or irritability are signs of depression. This gentleman describes it beautifully:
"On paper, I should be happy. I’m an author, a keynote speaker, and recently starred in an international commercial campaign for Microsoft, with my two amazing daughters. But I learned the hard way that depression doesn’t give a damn about your personal success or your life circumstances. Things that I used to enjoy—like being a dad—brought no happiness whatsoever. It was like a black rain cloud followed me around everywhere. Just getting out of bed in the morning required a Herculean effort."

A new project is brewing at AHC!!! The transition into motherhood has been truly happy and humbling for me. The respect I have for ALL mothers, of ALL types, runs deep. The first step of our new project is for all those Working Mommas out there. Here's an article that is uplifting to working mom's. While I love this article, it is also counter to what many working mothers feel: overwhelmed, confused and, at times, GUILTY! AHC is committing to helping with his process! We can't wait!

"After several minutes of shifty anxiety, and excessive attempts to convince myself that I was going to be ok, I was reminded from my training and experience in Acceptance Commitment Therapy ACT that “I am not my mind.” I remembered that my mind is an organ designed to help me survive and that it is not always right and is certainly only rarely accurate. I remembered that my mind would prefer that I assume the worst and retreat into safety than engage my life and move toward growth."

To piggy back off my last post (because I am getting excited now and feel compelled to share and inform!)...
Have you ever asked yourself, "Am I depressed?" or "What really IS depression?"
As as a therapist, people often share with me that they are *not* depressed because they don't feel particularly sad or upset. However, depression is often a buzz word that is highly stigmatized and possibly misunderstood. Instead of focusing on the typical image of depression, here are some other symptoms that could indicate possible depression that may go overlooked:
- Disturbed sleep - too much or too little
- Avoidance - social withdrawal, alcohol abuse, lack of accountability
- IRRITABILITY and ANGER
- Poor Motivation, low energy, loss of interest
- Indecision, poor concentration
- Poor appetite
- Chronic headaches, stomach aches, body aches
- Poor sexual desire
At the end of the day, it is less important WHAT we call it, and more important that we SEEK help to make improvements if your quality of life is lacking, if your work or social functioning is impaired, or if you feel that your life doesn't have the meaning that it should. Often times, we might think that these symptoms are related to other problems in our life (such as, If only I liked my job OR If my family was more supportive) when in reality we must start from within the make our life what we want it to be.
Just my two cents. As always, feel free to message me with any questions or thoughts on this. Be well!

This is such an important piece of the health and happiness puzzle. I find that many clients present to me and are genuinely confused about what "depression" really looks like, and as a result they do not get the help that they need.
Depression has so many effective treatment options, and it is unfortunate that so many people do not get the help that they need due to this lack of information (not to mention continued social stigma). Ultimately, the result is increased suffering and increased negative impacts on the person, including their health, their family, their quality of life, and even their future.
Depression Is Now the Leading Cause of Illness and Disability Worldwide The WHO says depression rates rose 18 percent in a decade.

Having worked with victims of sexual assault, I feel compelled to point out how even a single act of sexual violence can impact a person for an extraordinary length of time, and it can significantly impact so many areas of the person's life, including mood, self-esteem, trust, future intimacy, parenting, family, and other relationships, employment/earning capacity, and the list goes on!! Therapy is confidential (which of course it should be!), but I think there is a disconnect in the general understanding of how extensive the damage of sexual violence can be.
