Trees KenTal
A local group of San Diego's Kensington and Talmadge residents working together to increase the urban tree canopy and preserve heritage trees.
Our native trees for the River Center at Grant Park are here! Join us and Tree San Diego on 8/1, 8/4, and 8/8 to help plant native trees that improve biodiversity, clean the air, and provide much needed shade. Learn more here: https://sandiegoriver.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=902333
Another KenTal Earth Day celebration in the bag! Despite the somewhat gloomy skies, we had another good turnout of neighbors looking for free trees, native plant seeds, and pollinator seed balls, and every kid found something to do - painting birdhouses with ArtForm, a Heritage Tree scavenger hunt, an "evils of turf" temperature test, and... free ice cream! Thanks to all our sponsors, and thanks to the neighborhood for a good turnout.
Now, go out and plant those trees!
And the trees are rolling in! Come on down to the Kensington Library Park on Saturday, April 13 from 11 AM to 2 PM. Earth Day fun, and free trees! Tree donations from City Farmers, Tree San Diego, San Diego Bee City and Kate Sessions Commitment will be raffled off - for free! With a wide variety, there will be a tree to interest anyone!
Plant a tree, get $100 under new MWD program aimed at expanding SoCal's tree canopy The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is offering residents up to $500 to plant trees and expand the urban canopy.
Free trees!
Only 5 more weeks 'til Kensington's Earth Day celebration!
On your next walk or hike along the San Diego River, see if you can spot some Cedar Waxwings. These birds are highly social and move in flocks. They come to San Diego County in the winter and feed on fruits of trees and shrubs. What avian sightings have you seen lately? Let us know in the comment below!
(Thank you to our amazing volunteer Cindy Pencek for this photo.)
We're getting in a "birds and trees" mode in time for Earth Day...

Perhaps better to grow your own roses..."This fast-moving game of romantic commerce never stops. It’s also absurd: The race required to provide a mass-produced bit of nature — at any hour, in any place, for as little as $10 a dozen — contributes significantly to the destruction of nature itself.'
Opinion | Why giving roses on Valentine’s Day — or any day — is really a bad idea Every rose has its thorn.

We are about to lose one of our "protected" Heritage Canary Island palms at the Kensington library park. Despite notifying the City that the palm is being attacked by beetles, the response is that they will apply another treatment "later this fiscal year." It will be dead by then.

Please trim your trees before nesting season begins!
It’s time to trim your trees!
The Anna’s Hummingbird, a permanent resident of San Diego, has 2-3 broods a year and can start nesting as early as January or February. Because many hummingbirds migrate south for the fall, this small window is the best time to trim your trees while avoiding their nests.
