Yvonne’s Story
Yvonne had a tumultuous past marked by childhood trauma.
At a young age, her father molested her and after she told her mother, she felt like she was blamed for her parents’ divorce. Struggling to find purpose, she turned to drugs as a means of escape. At just 16 years old, her pain was unbearable so she attempted to end her own life, resulting in a distressing stay in a psychiatric hospital for 72 hours.
Over the next 40 years, Yvonne battled substance abuse, enduring periods of homelessness and incarceration.
She was eventually introduced to the San Diego Rescue Mission through an acquaintance at church and with the therapy services provided here, she received a diagnosis of PTSD and chronic depression, marking the beginning of her healing journey.
“He gives us mercy each and every day. I’m a work in progress.” It is an ongoing journey towards wholeness, but Yvonne has found solace, support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Her desire is to serve others and spread the message of hope. She expresses profound gratitude to God.
How have you spread hope and support to those around you? How do you ?

“Praise be to God…I love Him and I know He loves me…Be strong and courageous. Those are His words. I want to hide them in my heart. And this place that has so many programs, gave me that. They gave me that hope. They gave me that faith and love.”
Thank you for giving help that works. Your support brings hope, faith, and love to those in need. Read Yvonne’s full story tomorrow and be inspired.

🎉 We are proud to announce that the San Diego Rescue Mission Oceanside Navigation Center has been selected as a 2024 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblywoman Laurie Davies in recognition of overall excellence, service to the community, and positive impact.
The Oceanside Navigation Center, the city's first-ever permanent 30-day shelter for men, women, and families, has made significant contributions to the community since its opening in August, 2023. It has already served 442 people, with 47% either successfully ending their homelessness or connected to longer-term care. While the facility is owned by the City of Oceanside, the San Diego Rescue Mission operates the shelter without government funding.
And on June 11, we were recognized by San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond with the “Uplifting the Community Award” for our efforts to change the state of homelessness in North County and San Diego.
Together we are changing lives! Your kind generosity is helping to end homelessness one life at a time.
