The “Renaissance Man“ Behind La Jolla‘s Litchfield Swim
Each year, the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club hosts “The Litchfield
Memorial Swim,” a popular Summer event for swimmers and spectators alike.
But what is not so well-known is the story of the man whose name is synonymous with the annual swim.
in 1968, Robert (Bob) Litchfield was a college student at UCSD, and a member of the first graduating class of UCSD, Revelle college. After graduation, he went on to such a diverse and inspiring career, that he was referred to by friends and colleagues as a “Renaissance Man.”
He taught English Literature, US History, and Humanities, first at Patrick Henry High School, then at Cuyamaca College and La Jolla High School. He was a lifetime independent student of art history, and recipient of the “Golden Bell Award” from the San Diego Museum of Art, for teaching his AP Art History students to be docents at the museum.
He consistently received kudos from his students, for inspiring their love of learning and instilling them with humanitarian ideals. Said one of his students, Stephanie Pfeffer, "he taught with infectious excitement, respect for student ideas, and a sense of humor. Most of all, he was kind. I have never met another teacher who is so universally well liked, by the jocks, the nerds, the misfits, the misunderstood. He made it his job to understand them all. He was a hero of the mind and heart.”
A resident of the Palomar Mountain area, Bob worked for several summers as a fire ranger. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, and studying the flora and fauna of the area.

He was also well known for editing the Palomar Mountain View Volumes I and II, covering historyand geography of the Palomar Mountain area.
Sadly, Bob passed away in 1982 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,
after undergoing a long course
of treatment. He was only 54 years of age at the time of his death.

Slnce shortly after Bob’s death, the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary club has sponsored the Litchfield Memorial swim in his honor. The swim provides funds for the San Pasqual Academy, a boarding school in Escondido for foster children of high school age.
