Our Indigenous partners—the Achuar and Sápara people of the Sacred Headwaters region—have invited us to journey to the rainforest and learn from them so that we may carry their teachings and message home and share their dream of a thriving, just, and sustainable world.

They live interdependently with the forest and work with its plants for food, medicine, and shelter. In order to continue their way of life, they must protect this area and keep it free from extractive industries. By going on a Pachamama Journey, you support the Achuar and Sápara to continue as the guardians of the rainforest.

When the spirit of nature is maintained in its healthy, thriving state, the Achuar people say that Arutam—the power of the forest—is alive. To be in the presence of a forest whose spirit is intact is a uniquely visceral and enlivening experience. You begin to feel, remember, and experience life through every sense. Your deepest self emerges, the one you’ve been waiting and yearning for.

Today, the Ecolodge is managed by the Kapawi, Suwa, and Kusutkau communities, which collaborate with neighboring communities to strengthen ecotourism in the lower Pastaza Basin, a region within the Sacred Headwaters of the Amazon.

The Achuar 06/17/2024

In the late 1990s, some of the Achuar people from the Ecuadorian rainforest partnered with the founders of the Pachamama Alliance. This partnership was based on the belief that all people on this planet have a critical stake in the well-being of the Amazon rainforest.

This collaboration led to two major achievements: The creation of the Kapawi Ecolodge, a sustainable tourism venture owned and operated by the Achuar, and the inclusion of Rights of Nature in the 2008 Ecuador Constitution. Learn more about this partnership to preserve the ancestral lands and culture of the Achuar.

Together, we can support the guardians of the Amazon! 🌏✨

Reforestation Efforts in Ecuador's Sacred Headwaters Region 05/22/2024

In 2023, Fundación Pachamama and Amazonian Indigenous federations—along with the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance, Reforest'Action, and the Sacred Headwaters Alliance—began a reforestation project in the provinces of Pastaza and Morona Santiago within the Sacred Headwaters region of the Ecuadorian Amazon.

The Reforesting Edible Forests project aims to plant more than 167,000 native trees and non-timber plants to support Amazonian families and communities' food gardens, known as chakras. This initiative also seeks to offer economic alternatives to extractive industries. Efforts to protect the Amazon's ecosystem and support local economies are ongoing as the project nears completion in June 2024 🌿
