Are you back in San Jose from winter break early and looking for something to do this weekend? If so checkout current gallery exhibit entitled "Beyond the Diaspora" at MACLA here in downtown San Jose!
This exhibition features the work of Afro-Latinx artists and pays tribute to their roots. The exhibition showcases the artwork we actively consume without realizing its connection to African culture. Beyond the Diaspora will look at both visual and performance art and its connection to the African diaspora in Latinx culture. Featuring work from artists: Diamela, Patricia Encarnacion, Vanessa Wallace Gonzales, Thomas Jones, DJ Leydis, Anna Lisa, Breena Nuñez, and Robert Trujillo.
New Kinships Exhibition 12/8-12/19 at Thompson Gallery (Art Building 127)
Community Dialogues and Interdisciplinary Connections presents two distinct, yet interrelated projects: Wish You Were Here, which features multidisciplinary contributions of visual and text based work focused on placemaking, and Community Table, which utilizes printmaking and design to consider food insecurity in San José.
Wish You Were Here began in Fall 2020, emerging out of discussions between the Thompson Gallery and faculty in Art, Design, and English as a way to meaningfully connect themes from the San José Story Map Project through the production of small-scale “correspondence art.” Students from across disciplines were invited to attend a series of workshops that presented techniques that could be utilized to translate personal experiences of living, learning, and working in San José into visual form via a postcard format. Under the mentorship of Design Professor Kohar Scott, students designed, prototyped and helped in the construction of an innovative, sustainable and environmentally conscious display and distribution kiosk which is featured in the Thompson Gallery.
Community Table builds bridges across disciplines and connects students in the art, design, and nutrition departments through curricula, visiting artist lectures, student presentations, and hands-on workshops.
Through Community Table, participating faculty and students have worked to create creative art and design based solutions for more culturally diverse and enjoyable ways to access and utilize available on campus food resources. Students have had the invaluable experience of using art and design as tools of social change as they move forward as arts professionals operating in a civic sphere.

[Composing the Future Exhibition]
From today to 12/18 at Jennifer & Philip DiNapoli Gallery (2nd Floor) of the SJSU Library
"Composing the Future," a NCWCA member exhibition, originally premiered May-June, 2021 at the Bankhead Performing Arts Center in Livermore with 64 artworks. "Composing the Future II" is a curated iteration featuring a selection of these and new works.
This time of transition offers unique opportunities. Artists, traditionally, have been both witnesses and the raw material for envisioning potential futures in turbulent times. In "Composing the Future II," NCWCA artists were challenged to flex their artistic powers in response to the extreme events of the past two years and to project their hopes, dreams, and ideas into the future. Learn more at ncwca.org.

Co-editors David Malinowski (Linguistics & Language Development, SJSU) and Stefania Tufi (University of Liverpool) are joined by distinguished researchers Jannis Androutsopoulos (Hamburg University, Germany), Joseph Sung-Yul Park (National University of Singapore) and Amiena Peck (University of the Western Cape, South Africa), to discuss the volume Reterritorializing Linguistic Landscapes: Questioning Boundaries and Opening Spaces.
With 19 chapters that take up topics such as representations of Israel and Palestine in South African universities, semiotics of civil disobedience in Hong Kong protests, graffiti as historical record of social struggles in Italian cities, and the importance of texts in "schoolscapes" for children's identity and growth, the volume is of particular relevance to the College of Humanities and the Arts' Borderlands programming theme (http://ow.ly/G8xw50GPuqR).
