Cone of shame, but make it fabulous. 🌼

Harbor is one of the hundreds of kittens we have taken in so far this summer. At only about a month old, this brave little lady came into our care with a severe eye issue that required immediate medical intervention.

Injuries and illnesses that affect young kittens' eyes are incredibly common. While these ailments may sometimes be responsive to treatment, Harbor's condition was going to cause her lifelong discomfort. To prevent any future infection or irritation, our veterinarian, Dr. Andersen, was able to remove her eye. The plush flower is just a fancy recovery cone, providing her comfort while kitten-proofing her stitches.

After taking some time to heal in her foster home, this one-eyed wonder was quickly adopted upon her return to the shelter. We've had quite the voyage together, but we're wishing sunshine and calm seas to Harbor in her new home!

One of the most rewarding aspects of our annual My Best Friend Wine Label competition in partnership with Quantum Leap Winery is getting to read all of the wonderful updates from the Pet Alliance alumni who enter. 🌟🏆

We were so excited to hear that Violet, who was adopted from our Sanford shelter in 2023, is making quite a stir in the world of dog sports! The bio her adopter wrote for her just shows that shelter pets can do anything:

"I saw Violet's entry photo on Pet Alliance's website. I just had this feeling that I needed to meet her. The next day I went to the shelter. She was the only dog that came up to say hi from their kennel. They told me her previous owners gave her up for being 'too much.' I got a chance to take her out for a walk and play. We clicked instantly! Since being adopted we have competed in different sports and she currently hold over 5 different titles across different disciplines! She has helped me during a really hard time in my life. So much for being 'too much.' She's just right for me!"

The reasons animals end up in our care are complex and often extremely emotional. For Chivas and Bruno, the life they’d known for the past 13 years changed dramatically upon the sudden death of one of their previous owners.

Without their primary caregiver, financial hardship made it impossible for the remainder of their family to continue to afford their pets. They made the heartbreaking decision to surrender the pair to our Sanford shelter, where the pint-sized seniors are now looking for a fresh start.

Bruno and Chivas are a quiet, shy duo who love nothing more than a cozy place to nap the day away. You may notice that their fur is a little patchy due to a flea allergy, but our veterinary team has been hard at work healing their skin. As long as they remain on flea prevention, the problem should resolve on its own with time. While in our care, they have also gotten a dental cleaning and a paw-dicure to freshen up their nails.

We know we have a lot of senior pet and small dog fans out there. If you have a comfortable spot in your home where these two can settle into their golden years, come meet them at our Sanford shelter today!

We have a delightfully frosty update on Pet Alliance alumni Ice (now Linkin)! 🧊

Ice, known in the shelter for his signature "eyebrow" and charismatic personality, spent three months in our care before being adopted back in March. Since then, it looks like he's been napping, sun bathing, and adventuring into his best life!

We're grateful to Dolly's Dream for sponsoring Ice's adoption and helping us raise awareness for our beloved square-headed mixed breed pups! Learn more about the program and view our currently available Dolly's Dream dogs here: https://i.mtr.cool/fylwtedjxu

While we're getting absolutely soaked today, it seems as good a time as ever to remind you to be hurricane prepared in the event of future storms! 🌧️🌀☔

1. Never leave your pet behind. It may seem obvious to pet owners to always take their pet with them in the event of an evacuation, but it can be a stressful time to make decisions. That's why it's important to have a plan!

2. Place two ID tags on your pet’s collar in addition to their rabies tag. Include a temporary tag with the phone number of a friend or relative who lives outside your immediate area. This will be helpful in the event you are separated from your pet and are a long distance away.

3. Microchip your pet. In the event your pet is lost and has found a way out of their collar, microchipping is the next step for placing lost animals back in their homes after a storm.

4. Prepare a travel kit for your pet. Make sure you pack enough food, bottled water, and needed prescriptions/medications to last at least two weeks. Include carriers, crates, bowls, towels, bathing supplies, flea/tick control, leashes, and toys.

5. Update vaccinations. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their vaccines as it is required for most storm shelters to show your pet’s records. Create a record file for each pet and store in a waterproof ziplock baggie or storage tub. Include pet licenses/registrations and any other papers relating to your pet and their health that are important to have on hand.

5. Carry a picture of you and your pet together. This will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in case of a lost pet. Add species, breed, age, s*x, color and distinguishing characteristics.

6. Have travel carriers handy for evacuation. Make your pet’s carrier or crate is a fun and safe space by placing treats, toys and meals in it on a routine basis.

7. Most public evacuation shelters do not accept pets. Know ahead of time where your pet-friendly accommodations are whether it’s a shelter, hotel, etc. Visit gopetfriendly.com to locate hotels or call 3-1-1 to inquire about pet-friendly shelters in Orange County.

As hundreds of kittens pour through the doors of our shelters this summer, our staff and foster volunteers have been busy as ever treating a very common ailment: ringworm!

Despite its scary and misleading name, this rash-like fungal infection has nothing to do with parasites and is fairly easy to remedy. Affected animals are placed in a foster home where they can be isolated from other pets and are given special baths in a yellow-tinted lime sulfur dip over the course of multiple weeks. Though it may not look glamorous, these "lime dips" are incredibly effective in making the pesky ringworm nothing more than a distant memory.

Once these brave little ones have kicked ringworm to the curb and are in the clear, they’ll be ready for their next big adventure: finding their forever homes!

After the passing of Lorraine Lavoie, a cherished Pet Alliance volunteer of 20 years, we've been honored to care for her beloved 15-year-old cat, Sunny. ☀️

Under the guidance of our dedicated staff and volunteers, this majestic kitty has adjusted well to her new accommodations after spending her entire life in Lorraine's loving home. Lorraine’s exceptional care in managing Sunny’s diabetes, which requires insulin shots every 12 hours and a special diet, has aided immensely in this transition.

While we'd love to have Sunny's regal presence oversee our daily operations forever, we'd much prefer her to be happy and thriving in a new home. If you’re interested in providing this sweet senior with the purr-fect retirement paradise, come visit her at our Downtown Orlando cat shelter today!

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take - Wayne Gretzky" - Wyner 🏢

While 6-year-old Wyner never worked in THE Office, he used to reside in AN office and seems to still be right at home living the corporate life. He's currently the supervising feline of our shelter break room, where he greets everyone who enters with an endearing chirping noise and a gentle headbutt.

Wyner has a very independent personality and seems to enjoy monitoring his coworkers more than directly collaborating with them. You could say he's more of a Dwight than a Michael.

Despite his stellar performance at napping and posing for photos, we unfortunately don't have a permanent position for him to fill here. If you'd like to meet with this distinguished bossman for an interview, come visit him at our Downtown Orlando cat shelter today!

As many of you know, local shelters are swarmed with kittens during the summer months. While most of these youngsters come to us alone or with their littermates, occasionally we do receive family units.

A young kitten's best chance of survival is with their mother, but unsocialized adult cats do not thrive in an indoor environment. In those cases, it is best to observe from afar while mom raises her litter on her terms. When the kittens are eating on their own, they can be brought to a shelter to continue their journey to adoption. Mom can be trapped, spayed, vaccinated, and returned to her outdoor home.

Every once in a while though, we come across a mother cat who is at least tolerant of human interaction and will allow us to help her take the best possible care of the litter.

Allegra and her four kittens, along with Kienna and her five kittens, were found outside in the same location. While the moms are healthy and doing their very best for their offspring, their kittens are battling eye infections that are very common in those born outdoors. Luckily, these all-star mommas are more than happy to be out of the heat and are adapting well to indoor life, which makes our job much easier.

Our veterinary staff got right to work nursing these big families back to health while our shelter staff coordinated getting them into foster homes. Once their kittens are eating on their own and no longer require their moms for sustenance, Allegra and Kienna will be spayed and have a chance to find a family of their own!

You can make a world of difference to pets like Allegra and Kienna by becoming a foster! Learn more: https://i.mtr.cool/gdapiqgyej

We recently welcomed 16 shelter dogs from Grand Cayman seeking refuge from Hurricane Beryl. ✈️

As we Floridians know, it is impossible to truly predict the wrath of a hurricane. While we always hope for the best, we can be without power and running on limited resources for weeks in the wake of a strong storm. It can be a massive struggle for shelters and rescues in the Caribbean to properly care for their animals if they lose power, water, or other critical infrastructure.

While we can't control the weather, we can give pets in need a safe haven and a fresh start.

As the storm barreled closer to Grand Cayman last week, the incredible One Dog At A Time worked tirelessly to secure travel arrangements for the dogs to fly from the island to Tampa International Airport where Pet Alliance staff would be waiting for them. We received 9 just before Beryl hit, then 7 more as soon as it was safe to get them off the ground after it passed.

Now settled into the Sunshine State, many of these pups have already been adopted!

We are always thinking of our Caribbean rescue partners during this unpredictable time of year and thank them for their heroic dedication to the pets in their care. We're proud to have been able to offer a helping hand to these special dogs and wish them all the best in their new homes!

So fresh, so clean! ✨

The cattery at our Sanford shelter is now back open to the public with a crisp new coat of paint and an updated layout!

One of the cats waiting to greet you in this reimagined space is 11-year-old Goat, who has been in our care for just about a month now following the passing of his previous owner.

We know that he was loved dearly in his last home and we're hoping to help this classy tuxedo senior make the right connection to a fabulous new adopter. Goat can be a bit shy and might not be waiting at his kennel door for visitors, so be sure to take a peek behind the curtain of his special towel fort if you'd like to say hello! Once he's had a chance to formally greet you, he'll come right out for chin scratches.

We're excited to welcome you back to the Sanford cattery and look forward to introducing you to Goat and our other adoptable kitties today!

We're wagging our tails for Pet Supermarket, who generously raised $11,816 for Pet Alliance during this year's "Lend-A-Paw" campaign!

A massive thank you to all those incredible pet parents who thought of our cats and dogs while picking up a treat for their furry, scaly, or feathered friend at home! 🧡

07/02/2024

The 4th of July is almost upon us! While humans get to enjoy pretty fireworks and tasty BBQ, this day can be a stressful one for our furry family members. Here are some tips to help make your pet more comfortable:

1. Do not bring your pet along to neighborhood fireworks. The safest place for them is at home!

2. Prepare a safe “den” in your home for your pet. Spaces like underneath a bed or an open closet work perfectly.

3. Feed and walk your pet before dusk.

4. Keep a chew toy or treat on hand as a distraction from flashes and scary sounds. You can also turn on the TV or play calming music to help muffle the noise.

5. Make sure your pet is tagged and their microchip information is up to date. If you need to update information on your pet’s microchip, this database can help you get started: https://i.mtr.cool/knlthjaurl

6. Try not to reward your pet’s anxiety with extra attention. It may be hard, but it’s better to practice distraction techniques.

Our shelters and clinics will be closed Thursday, July 4. Have a safe and calm holiday! 🇺🇸
