Chumash Cultural Resource Preservation - CCRP

We are preservation advocates working together to preserve archaeological sites and other cultural resources. WHAT ARE CULTURAL RESOURCES?

Our mission is to protect and preserve cultural resources such as sacred sites, archaeological sites, historical sites, and resource gathering. Arroyo willow is used for the interior framework of the AP'. Typically large 2 to 3 inch diameter poles are used. Arroyo willow is often found to be fairly straight and bends very well. For the outer framework smaller willow is used to bind the tule to the frame. Typically all willow is soaked for a for a few weeks before use to allow them to flex without cracking. I like to find freshly grown stalks which are very playable.
In my old AP construction i did not remove the outer bark layer. In attempt to keep the willow strong. This time removing of the bark provides a lovely esthetic effect.

TULE collection, dry out stage. The dry stations creates for this years process were not ideal for proper production of straight stalks. The spacing between the racks allows the stalks to curl then fall through the dry station frame. This creates cracks and bends to the stalk. Not good for use. Fortunately was able to recover a good straight bundle for use.

When a stalk bends it creates a crack. This reduces the strength of the stalk. Cracks lead to breaks.

Next year, the orginal dry rack design will be used. Its a backers rack style.

The odd thing is look at the left side of the bottom stalks, they are a foot away from the dry rack..as if they fell forward than moved backwards! So odd.

Arundo drying station.
Arundo donax is a tall perennial cane. Most folks will think of it being bamboo, they are not but they are distant cousins.
Arundo was introduced by the Spanish in the 1700s, as fencing and ceiling boards. Later in the 1800s it was used for erosion control in drainage canals. Selected for its robust uses and because it would grow to leangths as long at 25ft and withing a few weeks.
Unfortunately it is highly invasive and threatening riparian Ecosystem by outcropping native species such as willow and for water. The monopolization of space, water, and sunlight. At least ten protected animal species in California suffer habitat loss to arundo.
So when we go ask property owners to cut this down for project uses, they all are very welcoming.

This dry station is bound together using rebar wire. The design allows for the Tule stalks to dry out vertically. The tule is flipped every other day to get a well dried out stalks.
