With the upcoming celebrations for Fourth of July, Santa Barbara County Animal Services (SBCAS) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of your pets. The Fourth of July festivities can be a stressful and dangerous time for pets. Loud noises and fireworks can scare and disorient animals, causing them to run away. Sadly, many pets are lost, injured, or even worse during these events.
SBCAS offers the following tips to help keep your pets safe:
• Keep pets indoors and in a secure environment during fireworks displays.
• Ensure your pets have ID tags with your current contact information.
• Create a safe, quiet space where your pet can feel secure.
• Keep a close eye on your pet and do not leave them unattended outside.
"Our shelters do our best to care for lost pets, but they are no substitute for the comfort and safety of a home," said Sarah Aguilar, Director of SBCAS. "We encourage pet owners to take these precautions to ensure their pets remain safe during the holiday."
SBCAS is also asking for help to keep our shelters from overflowing, by asking community members to foster a shelter dog to make sure we have space for the scared dogs that will be coming in after the holiday. The dedicated staff and volunteers at our shelters in Santa Barbara, Lompoc and Santa Maria would be happy to match community members with a foster pet to keep them company over the holiday. It’s a fun way to enjoy the summer with a canine visitor, and it will make a world of difference.
SBCAS counts on our animal loving community, and we hope we won’t see your dog coming in as a stray on the 5th of July!
To foster one of our dogs, come visit us during regular business hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 10am – 6pm. Remember, we WILL be open on July 4th to help keep pets safe and get them back home as quickly as possible.

Our very special girl, Lulu, got adopted today! It's bittersweet for those of us who fell in love with her during the part of her life journey while she was with us. But what we always wanted for her from the very beginning was to become healthy and be able to go to a home that would care for her and love her as much as we have!
