Ooh-Wee it’s hot out in Southern California with temperatures reaching 115 in the sun! On these scorching days our first priority is to keep the tortoises comfortable. Their habitats are designed to have plenty of shaded areas and plants to retreat under for thermoregulation. However when it’s this hot it’s important that and we keep their habitats moist and cool, as well as provide fresh water in their bowls and ponds throughout the day. Now it’s time for me to cool down with a tall glass of ice water. 🥵

The Madagascar big-headed turtle, Erymnochelys madagascariensis is one of the most endangered species of turtles in the world. This ancient species faces extreme habitat destruction from the slash and burn agricultural practices which affect the waterways these turtles call home in the western region of Madagascar. They are also opportunistically harvested for food as well as illegal smuggling to the black market animal trade. So what can you do to help save them from extinction? Support conservation programs that focus on species survival breeding programs and conservation awareness for all turtle species.
For we’d like to share this scenic photo of one of the important eco preserves for nesting sea turtles.

What better way to celebrate 🐢 then a quick video of our biggest to date! One year ago we were able to assist in a massive animal welfare rescue alongside The Wild Animal Sanctuary and The US Fish and Wildlife Service to rescue over 250 reptiles, 83 of which were turtles and tortoises, from Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 Check it out!

🌎 International Biological Diversity Day is about raising awareness and reversing the loss of our planets biodiversity. 🐢 Do you know scientists estimate 60% of the world and risk extinction. 🤯 The primary cause is habitat destruction, and each of these species require very specific habitats to survive so they don’t have any options once it’s been destroyed for human inhabitation. Make today the day you ! 🌵

Amazing conservation work by TSA. These tortoises are from one of the biggest wildlife trafficking busts of radiated tortoises and it’s a proud moment that so many will be returning to the wild.

Shermie the leopard tortoise enjoyed nibbling on the grass today while she soaked up the sun! She came to live with us almost a year ago when her family needed to find her a new home. She has settled in well, grazes on the fresh grass and weeds, and puts herself to bed in her heated house each night.
Freckles has been enjoying the new hammock! Both lounging on top to bask and retreating underneath for a snooze. Enrichment items that encourage natural behaviors are an important part of good husbandry and maintaining healthy animals.

A big thank you to Sharon & James Girard for their continued support of the work we do here at Carapace Conservation. Donations like these play an important role in our ability to rescue and care for tortoises and turtles in need. Critical Care and Probios are excellent salad toppers to boost a tortoise’s health and immune system but most importantly they are vital for any sick or malnourished tortoises we rescue. Our Amazon wishlist has been updated if anyone would like to check it out and consider making a supply donation.

Freckles is on the edge of her rock waiting for her meal. She is one of our animal ambassadors from the Puerto Rico Zoo rescue and has settled in amazingly. We rotate prey items for her to maintain a variety of options and dust them with calcium or vitamin powder for optimum health.
One of our supporting donors got a special Galapagos Tortoise Experience this weekend. It’s always fun to talk tortoises but it’s more fun when they are tortoise enthusiasts too!
We want to say THANK YOU to our supporters who donated all these great supplies on our Amazon wishlist! They will all be put to use right away and the wishlist has been updated. If anyone is interested in supporting us by donating supplies here is the Amazon link. Thank you!

We hope to see some of you this weekend!
Come say hello, learn about our conservation efforts, and meet a Galapagos tortoise this weekend for the Reptile Super Show at the Pomona Fairplex! We’re excited for this event and the opportunity to share our love and passion for tortoises with everyone.
As the new year begins we look back at the biggest project of #2023 in Puerto Rico, where we rescued over 250 reptiles from the island. We came to call at the drop of a hat with little knowledge of the situation. It was quickly obvious that with the lack of resources and funds the animals were not able to be properly cared for and in desperate need of help. It was a proud moment when each animal had been crated for transport to the US. Upon arrival they received health assessments, veterinary care, soaked to hydrate, appropriate housing and food. Most have now been adopted by caring families but a few still remain and are waiting for that special someone to adopt them. Are you that someone?! As we begin #2024 the possibilities are endless for the affect we can have on turtles, tortoises, and reptiles in need as well as our ability to support conservation and improve the standards of care for all captive chelonians.
Merry Christmas and happy holiday season to everyone. Thank you all for the support as we launched this year. 🐢🐍🦎
Our new stickers arrived today and I love them. They link our supporters directly to the donation page on our website. https://www.carapaceconservation.org/take-action
After rescuing over 100 boa constrictors from Puerto Rico most have been adopted to loving and knowledgeable homes. However, we still have some medium to large adult male and females that are looking for good homes. These snakes require a large space, heat and humidity to thrive. If you’d like to adopt one please reach out. It would be a wonderful holiday gift to place them all before the new year.
We are thankful for all your generous donations and support as we launched the nonprofit this year. Big thank you to all who made monetary contributions, provided supplies and food, adopted rescues, and lent a hand. We couldn’t do this without you and are looking forward to another great year and getting started on some tortoise research projects. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Our grumpy “Gus” has continued to recover and heal well since his rescue after a run in with a vehicle 12 weeks ago. He’s eating well and has a full blown attitude which is actually a great sign! It will still take months for the shell to fully heal but the repair is holding up excellently. If you are interested in sponsoring “Gus” and his ongoing care you can make a donation to Carapace Conservation at https://buy.stripe.com/fZeg2w2fG2ZOdWgeUV.
Thank you all for your continued support.

⚕️Update on the hit by car turtle rescue.
⚠️Pictures of injury may be considered graphic.
🌟He is doing great! Started on antibiotics and wound care before closing up the shell fracture. Fortunately there is no organ or body cavity injury associated with the fracture.
Made an unexpected stop today on the way home to rescue a turtle that got hit by a car so now I have a co-pilot.
