K9 Blue and Officers Taylor Billings and Craig Keefe made a surprise appearance at a very special 18th birthday for Stephen Fassnacht last week. Stephen is undoubtedly one of our biggest supporters in town.

A few days prior at a local barber shop, Officer Keefe overheard Stephen’s mother talking about his upcoming birthday and thought a visit from K9 Blue would be a great idea.

K9 Blue visited for a bit and showed off many of his new training tricks.

Happy Birthday Stephen!

The Scituate Police Department would like to congratulate Kim Brown, from Jenkins Elementary School. She has been awarded the prestigious Crossing Guard of the Year title by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) in collaboration with its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program. Congratulations, Kim! 🏆

Kim's outstanding contributions were highlighted through heartfelt nominations from the Scituate community:

"Kim is one of the most friendly and positive people I know, and she is always there when she is needed."
"Kim is a valued member of the community and truly cares about our children."
"She goes above and beyond in every way to make my child feel safe."

This annual contest, initiated in 2021, aims to acknowledge and highlight the crucial role crossing guards play in ensuring the safe travels of students and families to schools. The program received over 500 nominations for crossing guards serving in 48 communities. Representatives from SRTS partner schools, including school faculty and staff, parents, and community members, completed an online nomination form asking the following questions:

"How does your crossing guard go above and beyond to keep students safe? How is your crossing guard special? Do they do anything unique that makes them stand out? Does your crossing guard participate in any school/community events? How many years have they been a crossing guard?"

Crossing Guard of the Year: Kim Brown – Jenkins Elementary School in Scituate.
Honorable Mention: Peter Nelson – Wood Hill Middle School in Andover.
Crossing Guard Champions:
David Pinkham – Newman Elementary School in Needham.
Roberta "Sue" Minnehan – Vinson-Owen Elementary School in Wi******er.
Jacqueline Bellos – Midland Street Elementary School in Worcester.

The winners will be formally recognized at the Annual Safe Routes to School Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

The Scituate High School Junior Prom is scheduled for May 10th at Venezia in Boston. Students attending the prom will be provided safe transportation to and from the event.

We would like to remind parents and guardians of the dangers and risks associated with minors and alcohol. At a pre-prom meeting, Scituate FACTS provided parents with some very important information regarding the Social Host Law in Massachusetts. You can face both legal and civil penalties for violations of this law, which is summarized below.

The Scituate Police Department mourns the passing of Billerica Sergeant Ian Taylor, a dedicated member of our law enforcement family. He was tragically killed last week while working a construction detail.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Taylor family, friends, the Billerica Police Department, and the close-knit community of Billerica. As a committed Substance Abuse Prevention Committee member, he tirelessly worked to positively impact and build a stronger, healthier community for all.

Rest in peace, Sergeant; your legacy of service will forever be remembered.

Congratulations to our good friends at Weymouth Police Department 💙

Our WPD extended family is always growing….BUT what are the chances that three of our officers newest additions are born on the same day and at the same hospital? Congrats to Detective Regen Steverman, Officer Chris Lowrance and Officer Caique Reginaldo and their families on the newest arrivals.

Many thanks to U.S. Coast Guard Station Point Allerton crew. The Scituate Police Marine Unit participated in two days of joint training with them in and around Scituate Harbor. We were fortunate to have perfect weather conditions and K9 Blue on board with his new life vest.

Marine Unit members received instruction on variety of maritime emergency scenarios. We also practiced several different towing techniques and worked "man overboard" drills.

Our mission is to continually train with our Law Enforcement partners to ensure that we are prepared for any emergency situation on the water, year round.

The Scituate Police Department was recently fortunate enough to acquire an 11 week old English Labrador Puppy as a "Community Resource Dog". We would thank Town Administrator Jim Boudreau and The Scituate Select Board for their support on this venture.

The function of the Community Resource Dog is to help facilitate interactions during investigations involving children or adults, reducing anxiety and increasing communication between the adult or child victim/witness and investigators. The dog also provides comfort for people during times of crisis and aids and comforts individuals, groups, and communities impacted by violence, tragedy, or traumatic events.

The Department's program is part of a larger initiative spearheaded by the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office – "the Plymouth County Comfort Dog Program." This program seeks to provide comfort and emotional support for the well-being of drug-endangered children, students with adverse childhood experiences, and others who require service.

Scituate joins 20 other departments within Plymouth County, which are working in partnership on this initiative. As part of this program, Bridgewater State University has been awarded funding to study and evaluate the program's effectiveness in enhancing resilience, community response, and support for students and community members.

The Scituate Police Department recognizes mental health as a critical component of the services we provide and how it impacts our officers and communities. Over the past several years, enhancing our Department's mental health training and response capabilities has been a cornerstone of our efforts. Through the IACP's One Mind Campaign, we have committed to training our officers in Crisis Response/Intervention and Mental Health First Aid.

Officer Taylor Billings has been selected as the dog's handler. He is a veteran officer with more than ten years of service with the Department. For the past several years, he has served as the Department's Community Impact Officer. In this role, he has worked collaboratively with members of the community, schools, and many of the town's departments on countless initiatives and events. Officer Billings is truly passionate about this program and is dedicated to its success and the benefits it will bring to the community.

We are thankful for the incredibly generous donation from George, Joan, and Kevin Pacheco of Pacheco Kennels. They have been tremendously helpful throughout this process and have also supplied Labrador puppies to many other departments within our area.

Foundational to our success is our involvement with the school district and interaction with our K-12 population. Superintendent Burkhead is a tremendous advocate for this initiative, and we look forward to working collaboratively with him, the district staff, and our School Resource Officers.

This week we received so many great suggestions for a name for the new puppy. We narrowed the list of names down and asked the students and teachers at The Scituate Public Schools to help us make the final decision through a survey. We would like to thank everyone who participated in this process.

We would like to welcome "K9 BLUE" to Scituate and hope that he provides many years of service!

Please read the following message from Chief Thompson:

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be stepping off at 1:00pm on Sunday March 17th, 2024. We are anticipating that this event will draw a large crowd of residents and visitors, particularly throughout our harbor business district.

As we prepare for the parade, we’d like to draw attention to some parking and safety concerns:

Parking prohibitions will be strictly enforced along the parade route throughout the duration of the event. Citations will be issued and cars will be towed as necessary. All restricted and no parking areas will be clearly marked by cones, barricades and signs. These prohibitions include no parking along Kent Street (except for the east side of the roadway near the St. Mary’s Parish Center), as well as, no parking on any section of Edward Foster Road.

Road closures will commence around 11:00 AM around Central Park, Cudworth Road, and the Town Common. Other roads will close as needed when the parade advances down First Parish road and through the Harbor area.

Due to road closures and the increased volume of pedestrians and vehicles anticipated in the area, traffic delays should be expected. Speed limits and traffic regulations will be strictly enforced throughout the community, with extra patrols being added specifically for this purpose.

All visitors are strongly encouraged to use the Widows Walk Golf Course parking lot and the parking lots at The Gates Middle School and The High School. There will be shuttle buses at these locations that will bring people to the parade.

We ask that everyone please pay attention to officers on duty at the event and do not hesitate to approach any officer regarding questions or concerns that you may have. Please remember – If you see something, say something.

Also, please keep in mind that public consumption of alcoholic beverages and ma*****na are prohibited in the Town of Scituate and will be enforced throughout the parade. The Scituate Police Department looks forward to another great event this year and will be working diligently to ensure the safety of all participants and visitors.
