Congratulations to Captain Brian McGowan on his retirement from the Scituate Fire Department today.

Brain has been with the Department for over 45 years. He began as a call fire fighter in the late 1970s. He was then hired as Fire Alarm Operator in September 1980. In January 1985 he was appointed as Fire Fighter EMT. Promoted to Lieutenant in September 1992 and to Captain
August 1996. Over the years he served in the roles of Acting Deputy Chief and as Acting Fire Chief on several occasions.

As a dedicated member of IAFF Local 1464, he served as a member of the Executive Board and held positions on a number of union committees. He managed the Fire Fighter’s Mother’s Day race for over a decade and worked as a race volunteer for many years as well.

After the tragic Worcester Cold Storage Fire in December of 1999, Brian designed and oversaw the W6 Fire Helmet Sticker fundraiser which netted over $100,000 for our Brothers and Sisters of Worcester Local 1009.

Throughout his career, Captain McGowan was a great mentor to generations of young fire fighters and to new fire officers. His knowledge of the fire service is second to none.

Brian will be missed by all of us. May you have a happy and healthy retirement.

At 9:06 PM Sunday night, Public Safety Dispatch received a 911 Call from a resident of 2 Winslow Ave, reporting a fire on the front porch. When Firefighters arrived, they found both the front porch and balcony engulfed in flames.

Capt. Brian McGowan ordered a working fire assignment as crews attacked the fire, which extended to the attic and the first and second floors of the home. Chief Mark Donovan ordered a second alarm, bringing the Cohasset, Marshfield, and Norwell Fire Departments to the scene.

The Hingham and Hanover Fire Departments provided station coverage.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and does not appear to be suspicious. The home, which was occupied by 2 adults, is now uninhabitable. Fortunately, both occupants managed to escape unharmed. At this time, damage estimates are unavailable.

Geographic Response Plan Scituate Harbor – Thursday, April 25, 2024

Scituate and Cohasset Fire Departments, in collaboration with both towns' Harbormaster offices and Police Departments, are joining forces with Mass DEP and the U.S. Coast Guard for a Geographic Response Plan oil spill response exercise. A containment boom will be deployed in the water for the exercise.

📍 Location: Scituate Harbor, near Jericho Boat Launch
🗓️ Date and Time: Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 12 PM to 2 PM
🚤 Vessels and vehicles from Scituate and Cohasset Fire Departments, Harbormasters, and Police Departments and U.S. Coast Guard will be actively involved
⚠️ Mariners passing through the area are advised to exercise caution

The Marine Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act (MOSPRA) Program was created by the legislature in response to the catastrophic 98,000-gallon oil spill from a damaged barge that hit a rocky shoal at the entrance to Buzzards Bay in April of 2003. One of the key activities of the MOSPRA Program is to conduct training with local emergency responders on Geographic Response Plans (GRS) – plans developed explicitly for each M.A. coastal community to protect vulnerable environmental resources and infrastructure from potential oil spill impacts. Funding for these exercises comes from the MOSPRA Trust, dedicated to marine oil spill prevention and response preparedness. This training event will be the 100th exercise since the MOSPRA Program was established in 2004.

For more information, please contact the Scituate Fire Department at (781) 544-7903 or the U.S. Coast Guard via VHF radio.

We are overwhelmed with the love and support from the Wampatuck School First Graders who delivered a batch of Valentines Day Cards to the Scituate Fire Department.

Each year the Scituate Fire Department visits the schools on multiple occasions conducting fire drills and fire safety education. Getting care packages like these make us realize the impact we have on the students and we are grateful for the opportunity to meet with them each year.
