Every year, our amazing Jumpstart staff host a Literacy Carnival for young children and families from our early learning partner sites and the surrounding community. Participants enjoy fun activities while igniting a spark for literacy and reading. What a great turnout we had this year, even Rudy the Redhawk came as our special guest to join in the fun!
We are THRILLED to share the Sundborg Center for Community Engagement was just voted Best Place to Work On Campus in the 2024 Shine Awards! We are honored to receive this award from Seattle U Student Employment and their award review committee! This award celebrates the supervisors and on-campus employers who guide and mentor student employees as they learn and grow professionally, academically and personally.
Here’s what students had to say about some of the shining supervisors at CCE:
“One of Sarah's most significant contributions is her ability to inspire and motivate her team. She leads by example, demonstrating a strong work ethic, compassion and a genuine passion for the program's mission. Through regular meetings, training sessions and one-on-one check-ins, she ensures that her team members and students feel supported and valued.”
“Makaelah's mentorship has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and supported on their educational journey.”
“Liz exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and empowerment, making her a true asset to our team and community. Her dedication to fostering a supportive environment and enabling the success of others is unparalleled.”
“Sabrina truly embodies the characteristics of an encouraging, spirited and kind-hearted supervisor. She is so loved at the Center for Community Engagement and our Student Office Assistant cohort could not do our work without her leading by example.”
We have much gratitude for our incredible staff team and our amazing student employees! You make us SHINE!
Sending a shout out to two of our AMAZING CCE Student Employees who are now Washington Campus Coalition Civic Leadership Award winners!
Cyan is a Jumpstart Team Lead with a strong history of serving her community, including various roles as a peer mentor, tutor and other community service-based activities even before arriving at Seattle University. She is a Business and Law major with a minor in Global Business and has remained on the Dean’s list through her second year on campus. As part of the Business and Law program, Cyan is committing to six years at Seattle University to earn both her bachelor’s degree and her JD. Cyan is also currently working to start a club on campus called the Albers Consulting Association with another business student, which aligns with her dream career of becoming a legal consultant for nonprofit organizations. Congratulations, Cyan!
Vanessa is both a Redhawk Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) Lead and Change Makers Mentor Lead. She has built strong relationships with scholars, especially those who are not typically engaged or have had negative experiences with the education system. She shows up for scholars with joy, genuine care, a say yes attitude and curiosity that drives her. Vanessa hopes to stay working in public schools, sustain meaningful community ties and aspires to work with youth in her career as a school psychologist. She is a dedicated psychology student that works to empower young minds through education, mental health and guidance, nurturing growth and development to positively influence scholar lives. Huge congrats to 's own KeShay Dumetz ('24) who won first place in the 2024 Jones Idea Challenge for their idea presented to Follett Learning this quarter!
Follet posed the question: “How can we use marketing to get students, staff and faculty reengaged with the Campus Store and capture some of the market share of the general public in the Capital Hill area?”
In the spirit of building community and creating connections that KeShay is so skilled with, she and a project partner proposed a two-fold solution comprised of (1) offering care baskets, what they called “Hug-Your-Hawk,” in-store for students needing a morale boost and support, and (2) remodeling the unused space into a one-stop shop and lounge they call the “Hawk Hideout.”
Well done, KeShay! 👏 👏 👏

We've come a long way in 20 years and we couldn't have done it without you. To our students, scholars, families, partners, funders, staff, neighbors, community and more, thank you for being part of our journey and for walking beside us as we continue this important work. We celebrate the accomplishments of the past two decades and look forward to the goals ahead.
This snapshot of students was from our annual end-of-year salute called the Student Showcase, a celebration of the hard work our students do and the difference they make in the community. Their energy honors our past, fuels our present and inspires our future.
Our students and alumni wear the excitement of our mission & work both inside and out, and it shows. Some very excited SU students shared their Seattle University Sundborg Center for Community Engagement & Seattle University Alumni Association pride in 2019. They are the foundation of CCE and why we are able to make transformational educational experiences possible for campus and community.
Here's the thing about CCE... we know how to engage our community and have a great time while doing so. Our annual Block Party is a signature event and we love connecting with students on campus. Special guest Rudy Redhawk even flew in for a bit this year!
We've made some big strides in the past 20 years, but the biggest move of all may have been our physical space. A few years ago, we transitioned from the Douglas building on Cherry Street to the Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation on 12th & Marion. We're data-driven, definitely innovative, and very happy to be a big part of Seattle U!
It takes dedication, creativity and preparation to teach changemakers, and to provide transformative educational experiences for Seattle U students. In Spring 2023, Seattle University Sundborg Center for Community Engagement launched a series of workshops on Community Engaged Learning (CEL) that guided faculty through the foundational pedagogy, educating through and for critical, anti-oppressive community engagement learning, developing equitable CEL partnerships, and designing effective reflection and assessment strategies with CEL in mind. This is Seattle University.
Some parts of our journey have been easier than others during the past 20 years. We shifted to virtual connections and built community in creative ways alongside the rest of the world amid a global pandemic in 2020. Through our resolve and dedication, our mission of connecting campus and community for a more just and humane world remains strong.
How good are CCE Jumpstart staff? This good, and it shows. In partnership with Jumpstart, our support for young scholars starts early and puts children first. Here are some very excited SU students in 2009 who helped make our Jumpstart staff team a huge success.
The Redhawk Room at Washington Middle School is where the magic happens. It's where mentors from the Redhawk Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) connect with scholars, where Change Makers in grade 8 begin their journey with the cohort, and where our mission of connecting campus and community for a more just and human world blooms. Compassion, connection, gratitude, hope and healing all make the Redhawk Room a sanctuary and launch pad to uplift and amplify bright minds and inspired hearts.
A big thank you to those who donated to SU Gives on February 29. Your support helps Redhawks take flight.
The Change Makers Program is cohort of young scholars in grades 8-12 meeting regularly throughout the school year for tutoring and mentoring connections, test preparation, personal awareness and commitment to a full tuition scholarship to Seattle U.
The Change Makers Spring Summit is now an annual event on campus to gather and uplift these young scholars and their families.
Now boarding, Redhawks! SU Gives is live, today only, February 29 - your $5 donation (or more) gets us on the board and opens up matching funds! Our unique link to donate is http://tinyurl.com/donatecce
Help us take flight, raise the bar and some supportive funds for SUYI programs like Redhawk Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) at Washington Middle School and the Change Makers cohort for youth in grades 8-12.
We weren't kidding about that red carpet. Local young scholars are the true stars to be celebrated, uplifted and their voices amplified. This year's High Five Event at Washington Middle School was filled with cheering, support and spirit from Seattle University Sundborg Center for Community Engagement staff, partners, friends, Seattle U Athletics and more. We love our young scholars!
We love encouraging local young scholars and it shows. Here are some very excited Seattle University students in 2018 who helped make our Gatzert Elementary Mentor Team a huge success.
*2024 SU Gives* is just days away - it happens this Thursday, February 29, from midnight to midnight! During this annual online giving campaign, our goal is to collect 100 unique gifts to support SUYI programming. This achievement will unlock a $5,000 donation to support the Washington Middle School Redhawk Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) and Change Makers Program (grades 8-12). Gifts of all sizes make a huge impact.
Will you make a difference by taking 5 minutes to give the Youth Initiative $5 or more today? Help us meet our goal by donating to the CCE. We'll unveil the link on Thursday morning!
