As part of the BE Studio this quarter (Restorative Urbanism in South Seattle), we are hosting Paul Bauknight next Monday-Wednesday (5/13-15). In addition to working with the BE Studio students, Paul is hosting two events on Spatial and Design Justice – a student-only workshop on Monday at noon (lunch provided) and an evening lecture Monday night at 6:00. Paul is a dynamic and enthusiastic advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator - we hope you will join for one or both events. Please register at the links below.

Land, Housing, Injustice - a student workshop with Paul Bauknight
Monday, May 13th , 12:00-1:00 pm in Gould Hall 100 – lunch provided.

How has the intersectionality of land and housing created and maintained injustice in America? From indigenous removal, colonization, slavery, migration, and civil rights, land and housing have shaped and continues to shape our cities and communities in inequitable, exclusive, and unjust ways. We will explore the intersection of culture, policy, racism, capitalism, and the built environment. Paul Bauknight, the founder and president of the Center for Transformative Urban Design, is a Spatial and Design Justice advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator. Radically Imagining Spatial Justice: What can you do to work toward creating more justice for everyone? - a lecture by Paul Bauknight
Monday, May 13th, 6:00-7:30pm in Gould Hall Auditorium (room 322)

What is spatial justice? How can we radically imagine futures where our cities are just, inclusive, and equitable? What unique skills do designers possess and need to develop to facilitate the ultimate creation of these futures? How do we work singularly and collectively raising our voices to foster change? Paul Bauknight, the founder and president of the Center for Transformative Urban Design, is a Spatial and Design Justice advocate, activist, practitioner, and educator.

Sustainability, though a widely used word, is often inadequate when applied in practice. Its fullest meaning varies across geographies, ethnicities, cultures, and economic realities.

Prof. Julian Agyeman’s pioneering work teases apart such nuances to clarify how we might pursue “just sustainabilities”, or more fair and equitable approaches to address uncertain futures.

On April 24, 2024, Prof Agyeman will expand on these ideas, working from the big picture down to what professionals and students can do at the local level to positively impact desired outcomes.

This lecture is hosted by The University of Washington’s College of Built Environments and Department of Urban Design and Planning (UDP). It is organized by the Department’s Professionals Council’s Planning Lecture Committee.

Reception to follow at ARC 250.

We did it! Yesterday you helped unlock all of CBE's challenges and together we surpassed the college's goal of $28,000 and raised $31,195* and counting!

Once again you’ve demonstrated the impact we have when our community comes together. We appreciate your support in its many forms. Your generosity will allow the Office of Student Services to continue delivering an exceptional CBE student experience.

Thank you for supporting the College of Built Environments and ensuring our mission lives on!

Reaching over 200 middle and high school students a year, Youths in the Built Environment is yet another program supported by the Office of Student Services.

The CBE Student Success Fund has provided materials that significantly enhance youths' learning and understanding of the built environment. Being able to provide accessible programming for the youths is deeply meaningful to the students who participate. On-site learning helps bring the built environment to the forefront of these students' minds when it comes to making an impact on their community.

While Husky Giving Day is coming to a close, there’s still time to make a meaningful impact on the lives of CBE students and the greater community!

At CBE, student-led affinity groups like Somos CBE (Latine Students), Fil-Am Sa CBE (Filipino Students), Sahā CBE (Indian Students), BIPOC Students Affinity Group, and the International Students Affinity Group serve as a vital space for those with underrepresented identities to connect, create spaces of belonging, and thrive.

"As Chair of the BIPOC Students Affinity group, CBE has been a tremendous support. With the help of these funds, I’ve been able to grow the BIPOC Affinity Group community and begin planning programs such as alumni panels and dinner socials. These programs are integral to showing CBE BIPOC students there is an entire community of peers, alumni, and professionals who want to help support each other and make us feel less isolated in such a big industry."
-Rachel L.

By supporting our affinity groups, you are investing in initiatives that empower students, amplify diverse voices, and create a more inclusive environment for all.

Mentorship matchmaking is one of the many ways the Office of Student Services supports student professional development and networking. Programs like CBE’s Mentorship Program help students grow in their chosen field through one-on-one guidance, advice, and insight from a professional mentor. Your contributions to the CBE Student Success Fund help the program reach its goal of providing a mentor to every CBE student wanting guidance from a CBE graduate and/or industry professional.

Vision Zero road safety projects in Seattle are unlikely to have negative impacts on local business sales, UW study finds 03/04/2024

“Some business owners may be concerned that Vision Zero pedestrian safety projects lead to a trade-off between safety and economic viability. Our research found there is no economic harm in improving safety, and such projects offer the health benefits of reducing injuries,” said study co-author Andrew Dannenberg, a UW affiliate professor of environmental and occupational health sciences and of urban design & planning.

Vision Zero road safety projects in Seattle are unlikely to have negative impacts on local business sales, UW study finds An analysis of seven safety projects across Seattle found they had no negative impact on the annual revenues of nearby businesses for three years after construction began.

Student Profile: Sarah Samdin 02/21/2024

"After working for about two years in the field, I realized I needed a graduate program to complement my work and undergrad experience. I wanted something different that would directly apply to my job and vice versa, and this led me to the Master of Infrastructure Planning and Management (MIPM) program at the University of Washington.

When I first started my job, I had little experience working with Federal funding and even understanding the nuances of FEMA’s hazard mitigation assistance funding programs, but I knew that if I wanted to continue working in this space finding a graduate program that complements my work experience and education was important."

“I have collaborated with a number of communities, and have never encountered … this much receptiveness,” says the UW’s Dan Abramson, an expert in urban design and planning. “What the community has done already is amazingly foresightful and visionary, whether it’s the tribe, the school district or the city of Westport itself.”

How a tiny stretch of WA coast became the Northwest's tsunami prep leader A 15-mile stretch of Pacific Coast called South Beach boasts Washington’s only two tsunami escape structures, and more are in the works.

In response to the "insipent musicality" of the built environment of a busy intersection in Paris, French composer Jacques Besse stepped out into oncoming traffic. This account, as well as the impact on Besse of his experience at a uniqely democratic psychiatric care facility outside of Paris, resulted in “La Grande Pâques,” (The Great Easter: Ambulation) which has recently been translated to English by UW UDP's own Keith Harris. Survey: Remote work less available for LGBTQ+, minorities 03/30/2023

Remote work is revolutionizing the workforce, but does everyone have an equal shot? New research suggests that being a part of the LGBTQ+ or underrepresented minority communities in Seattle could impact opportunities for remote work.

“What we’ve noticed from the data, is that remote work actually exacerbates existing inequities in general,” said Lamis Ashour, a research assistant and Ph.D. candidate in the Urban Design and Planning Department at the University of Washington.
