🌸After spending time this past weekend (Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy Conference) with these brave kids and amazing group of fellow Physical Therapists - I’m overjoyed. 💫Feel so fortunate that we get to unite and celebrate their achievements. 🌟The reward I/we feel as therapist to be part of their journey is immeasurable.

🌸Reasons to Consult a Pediatric Physical Therapist #4: Your child / teenager is complaining of pain when playing sports. This can be due to multiple reasons but some of the most common reasons are muscle tightness and/or uneven muscle strength around the specific joint or area where the pain is stemming from. It is best to resolve this as early as possible to avoid further injury to other areas.

🌸Reasons to consult a Pediatric Physical therapist #3: baby hates tummy time. 👩🏻‍⚕️This can be due to one sided weakness in the neck muscles, upper body weakness, or poor positioning. It can also simply be due to the baby not wanting to work hard. It is important to expose the baby to tummy time for at least 5-6 times a day. This should be done either on the floor with a mat under the baby or on the exercise ball so the baby can push with his/her arms to lift his/her chest up. It is important to remember that babies learn from repetition and consistency. 👶🏽Practice, practice, practice👣

🌻Q: What is the importance of consulting with a Pediatric Physical Therapist? 🌼A: There are many reasons why a parent would consult with a pediatric physical therapist. One of the many would be as simple as their child showing clumsiness. This can be due to core or one sided weakness, or motor planning issues. By having your child work on his/her weakness, it can result in increase confidence and increase participation in activities. ⭐ Pediatric PT's work with children from infancy to adolescence and their families to assist each child in reaching their maximum potential to function independently and to promote active participation in all environments.

Carys is so excited to finally fully weight bear on her right arm after 3 months of physical therapy. She broke her right arm in November and after undergoing surgery, she was unable to use it due to limited range of motion and strength. After 3 months of hard work, she is able to do cartwheels. 🎉I am so proud of her, yayyyy Carys 🙌🏾

Babies typically move symmetrically - turning their heads from left to right, reaching for toys with both hands, rolling to left and rolling to right, kicking with both legs, etc. HOWEVER, one sided dominance starts to become more PREVALENT after 2 years old - make sure your baby is utilizing both sides of the body to prevent one sided dominance.

Parents should avoid putting shoes on new walkers. 👣 By walking barefoot, infants develop their foot ligament and muscles, increase strength in feet which encourages proper formation of arch, and improving their proprioception. It also allows the new walker to feel the ground which means there is less need to look down and decrease in frequency of falls.
