Coyote enjoys playtime in Yorba Linda backyard; rare behavior caught on video 07/31/2024

We just wanted to comment on the coyote video posted on abc 7 and correct some mis information. First of all we love seeing video out there of normal coyote behaviors that the public does not generally get see. And where the coyote is not being demonized.
Coyotes are wild canines and possess the same behaviors as our domestics, a domestic dogs behavior is derived from the wild canine, not the other way around. The coyote is not watching and imitating the domestics behavior, it is a natural behavior of canines to toss and play with a kill, that is what our domestic dogs are imitating when they toss their stuffed toys around, only they do not have to hunt for their survival.
Also there is no relocation of wildlife it is illegal and inhumane. Coyotes have territories and when their territory is not offering anything for their survival he will move on. When you have wildlife questions the best place to call is a wildlife organization that specializes in the specie you are calling about.

Coyote enjoys playtime in Yorba Linda backyard; rare behavior caught on video A Yorba Linda family was stunned to see a coyote enjoying some playtime in their backyard - and they caught the unusual behavior on video.

Thank you for your interest. The guidelines and regulations are basically the same and are great, what has changed is the department is rewriting California law as it pertains to the rehabilitation including placement of wildlife by taking NWRA and IWRC guidelines and inserting a stricter regulation specifically for California on what is acceptable in the DFW view as appropriate for placement. In the past, the DFW understood that each animal and their situation is different animals were placed on disposition and obviously we would not keep an animal in captivity that was in pain. There was an exchange of information between us. This new regime's mode of operandi and willingness to work with rehabilitators is a thing of the past. I have been rehabilitating wild animals for 30 years and never have I been so dismissed and disrespected as I have by this DFW. "Excerpt from Chapter 16: Placement of Non-releasable Wildlife Considerations should be made regarding the possibility of long-term complications resulting from some disabilities. Certain disabilities may lead to compensatory movements that could result in secondary, debilitating conditions." Considerations are always made and we do project a bit into the future but that is between the animal veterinarian's advice, the rehabilitator on disposition, and the potential facility that will be receiving the animal. Not the DFW.

It’s with a very heavy heart that this Bobcat has been euthanized by order of the Department of Fish and Wildlife. He was 2 years old and shot 6 times with a pellet gun through both eyes but was still visual he had a fx leg that was repaired, through costly surgery and extended rehabilitation. He was with us for 3 months, and he was acclimating great to captivity and was a very calm Bobcat, we also had secured placement for him.
Placement of a nonreleasable wild animal requires an injury that prevents their release back into the wild and a disposition that will not cause them stress for the duration of their life in captivity, this is something that the rehabilitator who has their care would know.
Why did this happen?
Because the DFW is updating and mandating new regulations apparently only wildlife in perfect condition that have the use of all 4 limbs and perfect vision in both eyes and can be used for education or in a zoo-type atmosphere will be placed.
In the past 30 years, rehabilitators had a voice and a relationship with the DFW who issued our permits that is no longer the case …it’s a sad future for California Wildlife, especially the underdog.
This year has drained our resources both financially and emotionally so donations are needed and very welcome we want to thank everyone who has donated especially the recurring donations and future ones…we know we don’t stand alone in our fight to care for wildlife!

2 days ago this little Coyote pup was hit in the head with a shovel by a resident in Sunland. We thought she had escaped the ordeal without an injury but we are pretty sure her vision was compromised and she now has a veterinarian appointment to check her eyesight and get a skull x-ray. The neighbor caught the whole thing through a ring door camera, so DFW is involved and filing charges! People have been asking how they can donate...Donations for the care of this pup can be made here through Paypal or Venmo 805-428-7105 https://wildlifecareofventura.org/donate/ As always thank you to Jonsie Reynolds Ross, Georgia, and everyone in evolved in rescuing this this little girl.

This Whittier neighborhood had dubbed this guy with the name "Frankenstein" he was popular all over face book but because of the diligence, compassion and knowledge of a few we were able to catch him ! ...It definitely takes a village. This guy should do well in Rehabilitation... we will post his progress..Thank you Christine Matteson and Jonsie Reynolds Ross You guys rock!! This coyote would have died a slow miserable death if he hadn't been caught.

We promised last year on this day that we would repost this reminder every year until everyone knows that...
COYOTES AND BADGERS GO ON LITTLE ADVENTURES TOGETHER SOMETIMES!!!

Coyotes and badgers will sometimes form a mutually beneficial relationship to get food. These unlikely besties are known to hunt together and can even be more successful hunting prairie dogs and ground squirrels when they work in tandem.

Check out the comments to learn a little more about the power couple everyone is talking about and their unique way of occasionally teaming up.

Update - Our Agua Dulce Bobcat that was shot multiple times with a pellet gun and sustained a fractured hind leg. 3 weeks post-surgery!! Thanks to all of you the fundraiser was a lifesaver! He is doing great, but obviously not releasable because 2 of those pellets went through his eyes, one is completely gone the other has scar tissue but he can see out of it. Release would have been ideal but is not an option for this guy. Although, he is really settling into the club Med life...Sleeps all day and is very active all night:) No idea yet where his forever home will be but I will search for a place more natural not open to the public.

Update 3-22 This guy had his surgery at Arcadia Vet Hospital by Dr. Klause and he did amazing! The surgery took about 3 hours it was longer and more work than expected because the fx was at least 4 weeks old, what happens with injuries such as this and all injuries is the body immediately tries to heal and protect the injury so there was a lot of calcification that had to be broken away to be able to move the bones back into alignment. He will be in confinement with no jumping for 6-8 weeks and another x-ray at 6 weeks. Thank you, Dr. Klause, and everyone who donated so this guy could get his surgery! We are still taking donations if for his continued care, Thank you! https://www.gofundme.com/f/Bobcat-in-need-of-help

Update 3-13 The story for this Bobcat keeps getting worse we had our appt. X-rays show this Bobcat had been shot with a pellet gun at least 6 times 2 of those shots went through his eyes the left eye is gone, and the right one can see out of but has a healing ulcer from the trauma, the pellets are still and will remain in his body. The good news the fx is clean and a routine fix, BUT the estimate was 7,000. VSMG was extremely nice and knowledgable and are going to try and bring that down because we are a non-profit...we are getting a second quote elsewhere. KEEP SHARING This Bobcat needs to know some human kindness in a world... at least a portion of the world that seems to lack it. Update 3-12: The support for this kitty is amazing! Thank you! We raised the amount a little bit it's been quite a while since we have had a cat that needed surgery and we were advised our goal was too low ...so please continue sharing! This guy has an appointment with VMSG (Veterinary Medical Surgical Group) in Ventura tomorrow, Wed. He is doing great! We believe the eyes and leg are related to a trauma that he suffered. He was in the field for 3 weeks before we were able to catch him so he was very thin on intake. His appetite is great, he has been wormed, and deloused and is currently on anti-inflammatories and pain meds..he is definitely feeling better. Here are a few videos his injured leg is the right one. Thank you for being a part of this team in his recovery!!!!!! https://www.gofundme.com/f/Bobcat-in-need-of-help Please help! This Adult Bobcat couldn't have come in at a worse time financially, because we are entering into the baby season the busiest and most expensive season of the year. All year we need to make difficult decisions based on the animal and his injuries, this Bobcat, most likely will not be releasable because of his sight in addition to the fact that he has an FX hind leg, most facilities would euthanize based on his eyesight but his disposition for an adult wild cat we believe is a candidate for placement in a wildlife facility. We need help with vet costs! Click the go fund me below it will take you to the fundraiser anything will help Thank You!

This guy died today. He was severely anemic, heavy parasite load and had mange. We will send him off for toxicology testing. God speed buddy:(. HEADS UP BRIDLE PATH AND WOOD RANCH Simi Valley, Wildlife Care of Southern California just went out and caught this Bobcat he has mange, He is showing us the state of our neighborhoods.
Poison is killing the wildlife in your neighborhood... You can Help!
National Park Service (NPS) biologists have studied bobcat populations in urban areas within and near Thousand Oaks since 1996. Before 2000, there were no bobcat deaths due to Mange. Then in 2001, one bobcat was found dead from mange. In 2002 it was eight, and in 2003 it was 10. The Park Service began doing necropsies on the dead cats and found that in 90 percent of the cats with mange, there were also high levels of anticoagulants in the liver. This was also true for coyotes and mountain lions. Why the sudden decline? By 2002, a new generation of rat poisons was on the market. Before that, Warfarin was the main ingredient in rat poisons, but eventually, the rats, gophers, and ground squirrels developed a genetic resistance to it. Companies then began creating compounds known as second-generation anticoagulants that were longer-lasting and more potent. Unfortunately, they are advertised as safe to use outside the home and people who use them are unaware of the harm that is doing to their pets or predatory wildlife. Bobcats, Coyotes, Owls, and other predatory wildlife. educate yourself and others NO POISON IS SAFE yes some were banned but the problem remains. Please talk to your HOA about the use of poison there are alternativeshttps://wildlifecareofventura.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/poison-Flier-2015-pdf.pdf

Wildlife Care of Southern California receives donated fur for the comfort and raising of baby wild animals from conscientious owners or through inheritance who are conflicted on what to do with them. In the past, the furs had always been retrieved from grandma’s attic but in recent years the furs we are receiving are new …which is very disturbing to know these furs are still being sold.
In California the banning of sale and manufacturing of new animal fur products officially went into effect on January 1, 2023, making it the first state to officially end the fur trade within its borders. This does not include private or thrift shop sales. Be mindful of what and who you are supporting.

Leading department stores, including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Canada Goose, Kering, Saks Fifth Avenue, Zegna Group, Rudsak, Mytheresa, and Moose Knuckle, all have been actively selling real fur. According to the 2017 Economic Census, U.S. sales of fur clothing amounted to more than USD 574 million. California comprised a majority of that figure, raking in nearly USD 129 million in fur sales, followed by New York, which accumulated USD 115 million. That year, California and New York were responsible for 43% of the fur sales in the U.S.
“Very little U.S. federal law exists regulating the treatment of fur animals. The Animal Welfare Act, which works to ensure humane treatment of animals, specifically exempts fur animals that are raised for their pelts.”

Apparently, this little coyote after his long struggle asking for help and getting it through medication was on the mend because of the huge heart of this community... It only took 1 hater to poison and kill him! He was healing this is a very sad day.

With the help of this West Hills community and especially Lauren a homeowner in the area who never gave up on this guy he has been treated for mange.
Below is a little information on Coyotes with mange. Thank you for helping us treat them!
We couldn’t do it without the community’s citizen scientist observations.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call 805-428-7105.
What happens to the coyote now?
• The first day the mites die and the coyote will no longer be itching.
• Within the first week all the crud and crusty debris left behind will fall off and they will have more energy, move quicker, and become more alert.
• Before or by the second week the wounds will heal, they will no longer be seen during the day, and they will go back to traveling with the family(pack) at night.
• By the 3rd month they will have a full coat of fur.
• What should the community do?
• Nothing. Allow them to continue healing in the area. They will continue to survive and find food where they always have up until this point.
• Don’t call animal control
• Don’t use Poison for Rodents
These Coyotes with mange are out in the day avoiding competition and conflict with healthy coyotes at night, they are seen lying in the sun to get warm, standing in the middle of streets or on corners where they have ” learned ” people throw them food. They are too weak to hunt and can live up to 2 years or more in this condition. Even in this condition, they are very difficult to catch and we have never had a report of them being a threat or aggressive.
They are anemic, dehydrated, hungry, and just trying to survive. Mange is a mite that most animals have but a good diet and healthy immune system can fight off. This condition is caused by a compromised immune system. RODENT POISON has been positively determined by the National
Park Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife TO cause death and debilitating mange in bobcats, foxes, and coyotes and we know it secondarily kills owls, hawks, and smaller animals.

Happy New Year!
It's that time of year when we are fixing, repairing, cleaning, and restocking the shelves in preparation for baby season! In the last year, coyotes have dug holes in their enclosures, turtles have busted through fences in areas they are not allowed, and remember these 2 beauties who came in from different situations and became best buddies! ... well they are set to become part of the Audubon Zoo in Louisana! We did a blanket drive last year and the turnout was amazing so we still have plenty...

But the pantry is Empty our normal donors have been in short supply... So we are looking for any and all brands of Dog, Cat kibble, and canned food. They can be dropped off at 352 Genial Ct Simi Valley. Vallarta gift cards where we purchase the meat for the carnivores and these 2 crazy cats. And of course PayPal we are currently going through 10 lbs of meat per day during the season we go through 20 lbs of meat per day! As always thank you to our consistent donors and recurring donors, no donation is too small, we are here and able to do this work because of all your support!
Thank you!
