The Sioux Falls Storm continue their early May homestand with a showdown against the Quad City Steamwheelers on Friday, May 10th at 7:05 PM.

Clown History
The El Riad Shrine Clown Unit was organized during the Sioux Falls Shrine Ceremonial in May of 1953. Former South Dakota Governor Joe Foss was our first Big Clown. In 1956, a 1927 Chevrolet fire truck was purchased from the Renner South Dakota Fire Department and made into a Clown fire truck which served for a good number of years. In 1960 the clown unit obtained six merry-go-round horses. These antique horses were mounted on three-wheeled individual trailers that hook in tandem to a Clown built Calliope wagon. In 1980, the Clown Unit built a large cannon. One of our clowns climbs a ladder and goes down the barrel of the cannon. Once inside, the clown puts a dummy on a shaft and loads a shotgun with blank shells. While he is doing this clowns on the outside are positioning a tarp in order to “catch” the clown. In doing so the clowns may solicit volunteers from the crowd to help. Following a countdown, the clown inside the cannon fires the shotgun and compressed air at the same time. The dummy sails out of the cannon and despite all of the efforts of the clowns and volunteers usually falls face first on the street. Much laughter and excitement and of course relief that no one was hurt. The horses, Calliope, and cannon continue to be in used in parades today.
The El Riad Clowns perform each year in parades, nursing homes, and hospitals. We participate each year in make-up, skit, and parade competition at the Midwest and Imperial (International) Shrine Conventions. We have won fifteen of the last sixteen parade competitions at Midwest Shrine Conventions. The sixteenth was cancelled due to rain. We are proud of what we do and what we represent. What we do is support “our kids” with 22 Shrine Hospitals across the country. What we represent is the greatest philanthropy in the world.
