Are you aware that research studies have indicated that there's a BIG connection between poor mental health and a lack of variety of good bacteria in our bodies?
We just added a helpful link to our Resources page for an insightful TEDxMileHigh presentation by Dr. Christopher A. Lowry, a gut microbiome researcher.
We also provided the link to a chart recommended by Dr. Lowry to help with choosing a probiotic supplement associated with alleviating specific symptoms, based on research conducted on specific probiotic strains.
All of the counselors at Restoring Hope love educating the community on the power of reflective listening skills. For a good laugh, check out this brief video clip on Active Listening from Everybody Loves Raymond! :) You'll find a lot of amazing other resources listed on our website as well.
The clinical team of Restoring Hope Counseling & Consulting, PLLC wishes you and yours a very merry Christmas!

Some of the Restoring Hope play therapists had the privilege of hearing our counseling-hero speak at UNT’s Center for Play Therapy conference last week. Thank you, Dr. Garry Landreth, for paving the way in the field of play therapy! We are grateful for your consistent service and leadership in showing us how to see the world through the eyes of a child.
You have undoubtedly experienced that moment when you are struggling or sharing your experience with another person, and you are immediately hit with unwanted advice. How did it make you feel? Frustrated, misunderstood, angry, overwhelmed, defeated?
When advice is given before actively listening and without consent, it can make a person feel insulted and dismissed. Before jumping to advice, name the feeling and summarize the experience to show the person you see what they are going through and that you care.
🤝 Oftentimes, that connection is the solution they need!
☀️ As Dr. Garry Landreth says, “If you have enough information to ask a question, you have enough information to make a statement.”
During our CPRT Workshop for Professionals, we asked our fellow clinicians to provide reasons questions are often unhelpful when a child or person is struggling or sharing something with you. Take a look! 👀
Questions:
- can communicate misunderstanding or a lack of understanding.
- place demands on the person and create stress.
- do not register in the brain when a person is in distress.
- can be accusatory or judgmental (Ex: "Why don't you... Why didn't you...").
- often elicit "I don't know" responses. (With children, questions are often not age appropriate).
- can be minimizing, leaving the person feeling like, "You don't get it," or "What I'm doing isn't good enough for you."
- prioritize parents' curiosity, the problem, or the solution rather than the person.
- are leading rather than listening.
✋ Before asking a question, it is most helpful to acknowledging the feelings and what the person is experiencing.
