Tip #6 on Retiring from Sport: Planning for the future is essential for preparing to leave sport. Those who plan for retirement experience fewer mental health difficulties and experience less negative well-being over time.
Action items:
a) Use resources on campus, and request meetings with career or financial advisors/nutritionists/trainers to discuss health and wellness outside of the field.
b) Consider exploring career counseling to prepare for job interviews and career planning.
c) Ask those who have retired recently about their experience and what might have been helpful to them.
Remember, planning for retirement while simultaneously being the biggest/baddest/strongest athlete on the court is possible and will allow you to feel like you have options when you are finished with your sporting career.

# 5 tip on Retirement from Sport:
Some athletes tend to have better experiences in retirement when they have continued their involvement in sport-related activities after termination. Athletes may coach, volunteer, pick up a rec league, or find a new sport to delve into. Pinpoint how or if you want to stay connected or drawn to your sport.

Transitioning from Sport Tip # 4:
Research suggests that those who have had previous experience with transition in other areas of life tend to do better in retirement from sport. Identify times when you have felt uncertain or did not have a plan for what is next. Take note of what made you successful, what allowed you to feel more confident and comforted, how you navigated that process, and what potential hiccups you could prepare for in this new experience.
Tip # 3 for Transitioning from Sport:
Social support is key throughout the transition out of sport. Think of friends, family, teammates, support staff, academic staff, coaches, athletic trainers, teachers, etc. Reflect and identify who you feel safest with, most connected with and who you want around you. Share with them where your thoughts are and allow them to help you during this transition process. If most of your connections are within your sport, also try to identify new circles to hook into before you retire, or identify avenues to stay connected with those from your sport when you exit from your sport circle.
Join Dr. Pulliam and Gabriela Spicer, LPC- Associate, for eight weekly sessions where parents can feel supported and connected as they learn bonding skills with their babies.
We will meet every Tuesday beginning June 6th through August 8th from 9-10:30 am. Sessions are $75 per session.
If interested, please get in touch with Dr. Carla Pulliam at 817-251-3507 or [email protected].
Look at these adorable babies coming to recognize each other in the mother/infant supportive experience we just concluded at Chrysalis! Stay tuned for details on our next group starting on June 6th!
Tip #2 on Transitioning from Sport: Try to identify multiple identities in addition to "athlete". Pulling from various identities (e.g., sister, daughter, artist, performer) while navigating this transition can be imperative as we can acknowledge the multiple parts of oneself to lean on and pull from. Talk to a professional or someone you trust about cultivating and celebrating different aspects of who you are (e.g., daughter, spouse, artist, performer), and identify how those identities can be amplified, or how your athlete identity can show up in other spaces where you can excel and perform.

Transitioning from Sport Friday Tip:
1) Those athletes who choose to end their sporting careers themselves or feel like they have control over their retirement tend to have better outcomes. Since each athlete does not necessarily choose whether they retire or not, depending on their circumstances, it can be helpful to identify choices and points of choice in your retirement!
a) How do you want to retire?
b) How do you want to interpret retirement?
c) How do you want to label it?
d) Do you want to have a celebration or not?
e) Do you want to grieve retirement or honor it?
f) Who do you want around you?
Journal it, contemplate it, share it!
