Union Gospel Mission

Since 1951, the Union Gospel Mission has been meeting the physical needs of people in crisis. Food, shelter and clothing, however, are just the beginning.

The earnestly desired end for our clients is a transformed life through Jesus Christ.

Brandon is now officially in Phase 5, the last phase of Life Recovery! This is when residents transition back into society pursuing employment, education, housing, and a healthy community.

"The only reason why I made it through is because I relied on God. And I didn't give up. I told myself that if I'm going to achieve one thing, it's going to be to complete this. And the only way that you can complete this program is doing it right.

I have a hope for a future. I come from a very broken family from people who are just very inconsistent or they'd given up on their dream. I didn't want to do that to myself. Now I am officially a student at SCC—going to be going to school for my AA with a direct transfer agreement to get my bachelor's in social work, which will eventually transfer to my masters at Eastern Washington University. I'm currently employed at the UGM Thrift Store, [with staff] who have been absolutely nothing but a blessing to me. I am privileged and honored to work with them and they have been great. It has not been perfect, but they've been great. I've rebuilt relationships with family members. I never thought I'd be on speaking terms again. I've got such a huge support and great group of people that love and care about me. I will never, ever give this up. I have what I never thought I could have again. That's what I have to look forward to."

Brandon, we are continually blessed by the perseverance you've displayed in your recovery. Thank you for sharing your heart and may you feel ongoing support and joy from the community that surrounds you!

UGM campers this summer broke in our brand new Crandell Adventure Course! This amazing new addition to the property was made possible by a generous legacy gift from Dan and Ruth Crandell, who became Legacy Partners by including UGM in their estate plans. As school teachers in the Spokane community, Dan and Ruth Crandell had hearts for children and their struggles. The activities on the Course help kids open up in conversation about friendships, communication, self-confidence, and trust.

We're so blessed to partner with friends like the Crandells whose legacy will impact hundreds of children for years to come.

After 11 years away from their hometown of Lewiston, Jeremy Stevens and his family have returned, ready to faithfully lead the LC Valley Shelter.

The community has pledged or given $4,005,459 as of September 3, and we are only $894,541 short of what’s needed! With support from friends like you, we can reach this goal by the end of the year.

Jimmy and his phase brothers, Brian and John, have now entered into Phase 4 of UGM Life Recovery! His counselor asked, "How has dealing with grief been different for you as you've been in program?" Jimmy answered:

"I never dealt with grief correctly in the past and I did it alone. I didn't have the kind of support and healthy place to do it in. With the time and support and the people to help you do it, it gives you time to actually have healing and perhaps a little bit of heart change. And that's been the biggest difference. Because in the past, I just numbed it and drowned it away with alcohol and depression and isolation and it's been a very different experience."

Congratulations, gentlemen. You inspire us all. Be assured that you're not alone and are covered in prayer.

Welcome to Phase 3 of UGM Life Recovery, Andrew, Riley, and James! You're doing the hard work—the heart work—of real life change. And we're all in this with you.

"My motivations for entering this program started out as doing it for somebody else. I was doing it for my family. They wanted me to go through this. And as it turns out, I don't have to please them. I have to do this for myself, otherwise I'm not going to finish it. So now that I'm focusing on my own recovery, it's become a lot more fulfilling." – Riley

This month, we're celebrating our Life Recovery residents as they move up to the next phase of program. Congratulations to these gentlemen who have moved up to Phase 2! Michael shared a bit about his journey:

"One of the most difficult things was that I was really involved in my drug use. And just trying to learn how to do relationships that are Christ-centered and not meth-centered has been a challenging thing for me.

"It gets a little bit easier the more you kind of practice these things. And now it's one of my goals coming in—just that I'd be able to hopefully find a supportive, social, healthy network that I could not only be a part of, but be a contributing member. And that's helped."

Help us cheer on these courageous men as they move forward, phase by phase, toward healing!

Childcare is an obstacle many women face. In our Women's Recovery programs we make sure that isn't an obstacle by providing childcare during class time so moms can focus on their recovery during the day.

Our Spokane location is in need of volunteers to care for these precious kids. If you or someone you know can spare 4 hours one day a week, please consider signing up for a Volunteer Overview!

Legacy gifts like the Crandells’ help us expand our services across the Inland Northwest. Without the support of our community, this would not be possible. Thank you.

In the Life Recovery program, part of our whole-person approach involves men and women learning to have fun from safe, healthy activities.

Our Men's Recovery residents went river rafting with Peak 7 Adventures and it was an exciting adventure. Special thanks to Peak 7 for the opportunity to work together, laugh, and even do backflips!

Replacing harmful cycles with fun-filled activities and safe relationships is just as important as the coursework, counseling, and life skills training provided in program. Experiences like this bring residents the joy of new life!
